Runes certainly can come in handy! #Zelda https://t.co/amGSOdbcnB

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduces a number of new abilities Link can access using runes.

In the video above, Nintendo shows off just a few of the things Link can do with runes in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - creating ice in water, lifting objects, setting grenades, and even imbuing objects with a trajectory and momentum so they fly off in a particular direction when given a bit of a smack.

It won't take you long to think of ways to use and combine these powers in interesting ways, and while they will certainly provide paths through the puzzles in dungeons and environments of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it's neat to think there'll be an emergent element when you're just roaming the open world. Maybe you'll do something the development team didn't even think of?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is coming to Wii U and NX, so we don't have a release date for it yet beyond 2017.
