The PSN has gone down yet again, uncomfortably close to a period of scheduled maintenance.
The PlayStation Network has been patchy and for many players completely inaccessible over the past hour.
Sony is aware of and investigating the issue, which seems to be affecting a subset of users rather than the whole network, but has no ETA or upates to share at present.
Some users are reporting issues with PS Store and online gameplay, our engineers are investigating.

As usual, the PSN service status page has not been updated to reflect the outage, leaving many consumers confused. Sony really could stand to learn from Microsoft's example on this issue.
Update: It looks like it's almost voer.

The downtime follows several outage periods over the past few months, and unfortunately comes just one day before a period of scheduled maintenance, which many had hoped would bring an end to the blackouts.
