The latest Minecraft 1.21.5 Drop, Spring to Life introduces an impressive new addition to the game – the Firefly Bush. These glowing bushes add a magical touch to the world, thereby bringing a fresh ambiance to your explorations at night. While not a new mob, the firefly bush is an interesting new block in the game. Minecraft Firefly Bush: What is it and How to Get

The Firefly Bush is a new block added in the latest Minecraft Spring to Life update. Aptly shaped like a bush, it usually spawns on the banks of the rivers and in the swamps biomes. You can also reproduce these bushes using Bone Meal. However, they behave in a different way than the usual grass blocks.

Right-clicking on a Firefly Bush using a Bone Meal will spawn another on one of its adjacent blocks rather than generating them on top of one another. However, do note that the new bushes will only spawn at the unoccupied blocks. Now, you can break these with your hand and store them in your inventory, and later use them to decorate your base. Do note that reproducing the bushes will deplete your Bone Meal stock.

Moreover, using a water bucket near the bushes will drop them. This behavior is the same when a piston is used to push one. This way, you can easily make a simple firefly bush farm using a single bush, a piston, observers, and a dispenser that uses bone meal to generate the bushes. Finally, these bushes are not flammable and would get destroyed if they come in contact with lava.

A Firefly Bush will emit glowing particles, AKA fireflies, only when night falls or the skylight is lower than 13. Moreover, you can only view this particle effect within the bush’s 12-14 range.

This feature can decorate the pathways in your base with a particle effect by placing the firefly Bushes under a layer of solid ground. The particles surely look fascinating and emit a bit of light, but it’s not enough to prevent the spawning of hostile Minecraft Mobs around you.

Finally, these bushes can be used in the Composter, giving you a 30% chance of filling up a layer. So, a whole stack of 64 such bushes can give you about 2-3 Bone Meals. By introducing the fireflies through these bushes, Mojang has successfully tackled the problem of fireflies being toxic to Frogs in the real world. Now, these aren’t a separate mob but rather a beautiful ambient effect perfect for the Spring To Life update.
