Mister Qi will do more than stab you for cheating, he’ll also dole out random gifts in the form of mystery boxes. These contain random items that can be quite useful and often have a lot of utility as well. Here’s how to get mystery boxes in Stardew Valley, and what possible items you can obtain by opening them.

As you’re playing Stardew Valley, you may hear tales of people finding “Mystery Boxes” all over the town. These boxes will only appear in your game if you see a cutscene of Mister Qi flying over Pelican Town and carpet-bombing the town with blue boxes. These are Mystery Boxes and can be found by doing, pretty much anything.
You can get Mystery Boxes in Stardew Valley by doing the following activities:
- Mining
- Chopping trees
- Killing a monster
- Digging up Artifacts or Worm spots
- As a prize in Mayor Lewis Prize Box
- A reward for Trout Derby and SquidFest
- Fishing Treasure Chests in the Skull Cavern
- Trading a Book of Mysteries with the Bookseller
- Completing Raccoon requests beyond the fifth one
- Completing the Bundle Winter Star Bundle on the Bulletin Board
- Purchase from the Calico Egg Merchant at the Desert Festival
- By opening a Mystery Box (which will give you two Mystery Boxes)
- Chopping down a giant Qi Fruit when the “Qi’s Crop” quest is inactive
- Placing Milk or Cookies on a table or long table during the night of Winter 24th
Interestingly, we’ve found the most Mystery Boxes by simply chopping trees around the farm. This may make chopping trees the most farmable option if you’ll forgive the pun.
