Oh No, One Of Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy Cards Is Using The Worst Moogle Design

Final Fantasy has been going for quite a while, and almost every time there's a new entry in the series, we get a new updated design for several of the game's iconic mascots. Monsters like Cactuars and Malboros stay largely the same, but the designs of some of the friendlier creatures have changed quite drastically, the Moogles being the prime example.

In an effort to properly depict the history of the Moogle, Magic: The Gathering has incorporated a lot of their designs over the years into various cards across the upcoming set. We've seen cards for the Moogle merchant Stiltzkin from FF9, the might warrior Mog from FF6, and a delivery Moogle that references the mailing system in FF14 (the best version of the Moogle). They're all neat additions, but unfortunately, there is one Moogle design I really wish hadn't made the cut.

Those that have played Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth should agree that the game's depiction of Moogles is probably the worst in the series, which look more like floating koalas than the classic Moogle we've all come to love. What made them worse was the elongated front teeth, which always gave them a toothy smile which made me uncomfortable every time I had to interact with them.

Lightning and company deserve so much more love, and maybe even a fancy remaster.

If they remained trapped forever within Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, I wouldn't have minded all that much, but now they've made their way to Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy collab thanks to the Summon: Choco/Mog cards included in the set. Both cards have a toothy Moogle riding on the back of a Chocobo, just like the summon in the game itself, though the more stylized card is admittedly a little less disturbing.

As much as they gross me out, they are unfortunately a part of Final Fantasy history, so I guess it's pretty neat to see the toothy Moogles make it in somewhere. We know that Magic: The Gathering has enjoyed poking fun at the more infamous parts of the series, such as the horrible laughing scene with Tidus and Yuna in FF10, so I guess this is another example of taking the bad with the good. For every Chairith Painsborough, there is a toothy Moogle, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
