Jack is one of the most compelling characters in Mass Effect 2. Her hate of Cerberus and severe trust issues create some tension aboard the Normandy. It also serves as a basis for her loyalty mission, which is called Subject Zero.

In it, you visit the now-defunct Cerberus facility she grew up in, intending to destroy it. Along the way, you get to hear about the horrors the woman had to face. But it isn't just eye-opening for you, as Jack also learns some things about her childhood that she didn't previously know. It makes for an enjoyable mission, and everything you need to know to beat it is in this guide.

Starting The Mission

You can't unlock the mission until you've beaten the Horizon quest. And even then, you may need to do a couple of missions before it triggers.

You will know when it's ready to start because it will appear in your journal, and Kelly Chambers will mention that Jack wants to speak.

So, head down to the Engineering Deck and descend the stairs to locate the wild Biotic. In the conversation with her, she explains the situation and what she wants to do.

Agree to help and then set a course for Pragia, which is in the Dakka system of the Nubian Expanse cluster.

When it comes to your squad, Jack needs to be selected, while Garrus, Grunt, and Miranda make for good teammates.

Entering The Facility

The start of the mission is pretty self-explanatory. You just need to follow the linear path forward through a few areas. Feel free to look around and loot anything you find during this time.

Eventually, you reach an interesting console that makes it seem like The Illusive Man had no idea what was going on in this horrible place.

Once you've turned it off, head through the next door to another outside area. Out here is a group of Varren, which serves as the first fight of the mission.

On most difficulties, they're pretty easy to take out. But if you're playing on insane, you may want to back up and get them from a distance, as they have no ranged attacks.

When the battle is over, continue forward to find a makeshift arena and ask Jack about it. Following that conversation, head inside to continue the mission.

Meeting The Blood Pack

In the next hallway, there is another console you should interact with to find out more about the day Jack escaped. After that, head down the stairs to find some dead Varren that were killed recently.

The mystery behind their death doesn't take long to solve, as a few rooms later, you find their killers, which are members of the Blood Pack. Get into cover and target the Krogan and the Vorcha with the flamethrower first, as these will take you out quickly if they get close.

As with most flamethrower-wielders in gaming, the pyro Vorcha's weakness is its flammable backpack.

After you've dealt with the first wave, a few more try to shoot you from the windows to the left. So, switch to an appropriate cover and wipe them out.

With them gone, you're free to bypass the door and leave the room.

A few halls later, you run into a few more rogues that ambush you from a walkway. Get in one of the few pieces of cover available and pick them off.

The Fight With Kureck And His Crew

Next, continue down the stairs and enter the hall that contains several cells. A small group of Varren will come out of some of them, but they're easy to take down. Now, move deeper into the facility to reach a room that has a few more consoles containing interesting logs.

The very next room is more dangerous, as it includes a Krogan named Kureck and his squad. Whatever you say, it leads to a big fight.

There are a few Krogans in this battle, but they thankfully don't attack all at once. However, that doesn't mean they're not an immediate threat, as they'll shoot you from range.

But before you try dealing with them, take out some of the Vorcha that are closer to you first, especially the one with the flamethrower.

When you see a Krogan start advancing, attack him from range and try to kill him before he gets close. Then do the same with the next one.

Finally, Kureck will come to take you out. He's the most dangerous enemy of the mission.

In close quarters, he's brutal. So, make sure to keep your distance, even if that means retreating a few times. When he's only got his health bar left, use Jack or someone else's Biotic attacks to immobilize him.

Once you've defeated them all, you can progress toward Jack's cell.

Dealing With Aresh

At your destination, you find the guy who hired the Blood Pack, and he turns out to also be a former resident of the facility named Aresh.

Yet, he's so messed up that he desires to get the facility running again. Naturally, Jack takes offense to this and points a gun at his head.

You have his fate in your hands. These are your choices:

  • "Killing Him Changes Nothing" (Requires Charm) - You convince Jack to let the man go.
  • "Do It" (Requires Intimidation) - You get Jack to kill him.
  • "Leave Him Alone" - This doesn't immediately convince Jack to spare the man. But you get a Paragon Interrupt opportunity to stop her.
  • "Kill Him" - Telling her to kill him isn't enough to make her do it. Yet, you can trigger a Renegade Interrupt to convince her.

Whatever happens to Aresh, Jack will ask to look around her room before leaving. It's up to you whether you let her or not.

If you tell her to take her time, you can ask her about several things in the area by interacting with them.

The items are the two-way window, bed, table, and the old blood smear in the hallway. Once you've seen everything, you leave the facility. And while on the escape shuttle, Jack detonates the bomb that blows the place up.
