New Indie Hit Meccha Chameleon Believed To Have Outsold Every Game This Year
Meccha Chameleon has been a next-level hit with its developers confirming it sold a staggering ten million copies in its first three weeks. It's even better than that for the viral indie hit, though, as estimates suggest it's the best-selling game of 2026.
Meccha Chameleon Is The Best-Selling Game Of The Year According To Estimates
Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics shared sales data for the first half of the year across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, and it estimates that, with 12.6 million copies sold between its release and June 30, Meccha Chameleon is the most popular game of the year so far. By some distance, too, as the runner-up is EA Sports FC 26 with 9.1 million copies sold.
The next best-selling game that actually released this year is even further down the list. That honor goes to Resident Evil Requiem, with 7.5 million sold. Forza Horizon 6 is snapping at Leon's heels with an estimated 7.4 million copies, level with Arc Raiders, which clearly continues to sell well, even though its player count is on an, albeit very gradual, decline. Slay the Spire 2, another of 2026's biggest indie hits, rounds out the top six with an estimated seven million copies sold so far.
Despite Caveats, Meccha Chameleon Is Almost Certainly Still 2026's Best-Selling Game
There are some caveats to Meccha Chameleon's success. First and foremost, Alinea's numbers are always just estimates. However, thanks to its track record of getting these things right most of the time, or at least extremely close to it, they are trusted estimates. If Alinea says Meccha Chameleon has sold more than 12 million copies, then it has almost certainly sold 12 million copies.
Especially when we know for certain that it has sold ten million copies and the fervor surrounding it is yet to die down.
The other caveat is that there's no Nintendo here. Pokemon Pokopia has been a system seller for the Switch 2, and I imagine if Nintendo numbers were included in this data, it would rank somewhere among the top six. However, despite its popularity, even Pokopia almost certainly hasn't sold 12 million copies.
What makes Meccha Chameleon's massive success even more impressive, especially when framed this way, is that it's only available on one of the three platforms from which data has been pulled. Three of the other five games on that list are available across all three platforms, Forza is on two, and Slay the Spire 2 is the only other game in that top six that can only be played on Steam.
