A 2026 Indie Game Has Shifted 7 Million Copies In Two Weeks, Selling Faster Than Resident Evil And Crimson Desert
Resident Evil Requiem is the fastest-selling game in the entire franchise. It sold seven million units in under two months. Crimson Desert, one of the year's most hotly anticipated titles, has sold a very impressive six million units in less than three months, which, given that it's a brand-new IP, is good going.
For as much historical relevance in gaming as you might have, and all your marketing spend, there is nothing more powerful than word of mouth and the internet, which one new viral indie sensation has just found out.
Meccha Chameleon, a game developed in two months by just two people, has now outpaced all of 2026's behemoth titles, selling seven million copies in just 12 days.
Meccha Chameleon Is 2026's Biggest Viral Sensation, And It's Not Even Close
Most developers can only dream of their game selling seven million copies. For context, games like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 failed to hit that number, despite being on the market much longer. That just shows the scale of Meccha Chameleon's achievement.
The title, created by Lemorion_1224 and Haganeiro, was conceived in Fortnite, where the two played with various hide-and-seek-style mechanics before settling on what would eventually become Meccha Chameleon. That game was released on June 10.
Shortly after its release, the game went viral on social media platforms like TikTok, and its sales exploded. Today, it hit seven million.
The announcement was shared on the game's Steam page, with its developers saying, "7 million copies sold! Thank you so much! The new official Japan-themed map will be added today or tomorrow." It was accompanied by the news of "more updates coming tonight."
Naturally, with such strong sales, Meccha Chameleon has become one of the most-played new games on Steam. According to SteamDB, it has peaked at a staggering 340,534 concurrent players. That's the fifth-highest of any game this year, sitting behind Slay the Spire 2, Task Bar Hero, Subnautica 2, and Resident Evil Requiem, and it's only likely to climb.
