Summary

  • Mew ex expected to shine with Genome Hacking move, copying opponent's attack for three energy.
  • Mew ex struggles against Pikachu ex's Circle Circuit due to the benched Electric-type damage specification.
  • Mew ex's usefulness is hindered without Electric-type Pokemon in the deck, making it effectively useless in certain matchups.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket has just undergone its first major meta shake-up. The release of the Mythical Island expansion has seen a Celebi ex and Serperior deck rise to prominence, while other cards like Aerodactyl ex and Tauros have also got some time in the spotlight.

Ahead of the set's launch, one card in particular caught players' attention— Mew ex. Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after release, some players are finding out that it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's Mew Ex Has One Fatal Flaw

Mew ex is expected to gain major popularity in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket meta due to its Genome Hacking move. For three energy, Mew ex can "choose one of your opponent's active Pokemon's attacks and use it as this attack." This effectively means it can use Mewtwo ex's four energy/150 damage Psydrive or Charizard ex's four energy/200 damage Crimson Storm for three energy, annihilating both Pokemon.

Unfortunately, it's not quite as useful against one of the game's other meta cards— Pikachu ex.

Pikachu ex's Circle Circuit has been a mainstay since TCG Pocket launched, dealing 30 damage for each benched Electric-type Pokemon. It's a great move for Pikachu, but not so much for Mew ex to mimic.

You see, Circle Circuit specifies that damage is dealt based on benched Electric-type Pokemon. As Mew ex's Genome Hacking copies the opposition's attack directly, unless it has benched Electric-types, it's not going to do any damage. The fact that it would cost three energy to pull off a two-energy move is bad enough, but its reliance on having Electric-type Pokemon means, unless you're running an Electric deck, it's effectively useless.

It's a very specific use case, but given Pikachu ex's continued prominence in Pokemon TCG Pocket's meta, it's definitely something to be aware of. Much like the fact that Dragon-type Pokemon only got one new card in Mythical Island, and Steel-types got zero.
