Almost four years after the release of the PS5, a PS5 version of Minecraft is finally here. Sure, you could have just been playing the PS4 version of the game on your PS5 until now, but starting from October 22, 2024, there will be a better-looking version of the best-selling game of all time on PlayStation's current-gen console.

As for why it has taken this long, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, it's PlayStation's fault. Spencer claimed PlayStation refused to provide Mojang with a PS5 devkit, stalling work on getting Minecraft to run natively on PS5 for all this time. All water under the bridge now I'm sure with Minecraft finally about to hit PS5, not to mention Xbox games finding their way onto PlayStation consoles since that alleged devkit refusal.

There has been a way to kind of play Minecraft's PS5 version for the last few months via a preview build. A test of sorts by Mojang to prepare for the full rollout on October 22. The preview phase is complete and now it's time for everyone to enjoy the best-looking version of Minecraft on PlayStation. If you own a copy of Minecraft on PS4 already, you will be able to upgrade for free on October 22. If you don't, but you'd like to hop aboard the Minecraft juggernaut now it's finally coming to PS5, there's a physical release coming.

PlayStation and Xbox releasing digital-only consoles to mark the middle of this generation is a grim sign for those of us who prefer to buy physical games. Minecraft getting a physical release on PS5 represents one of many reasons a digital-only future would be bad for the industry. At 300 million copies and counting, one of the reasons Minecraft has sold so well is because kids love it, everyone knows it, and parents pick it up when they see it on store shelves. That will apply to the PS5 version of the game too, particularly when the Minecraft movie hits cinemas in 2025.
