As we continue to wait patiently for any sign that The Elder Scrolls 6 is happening this decade, many of us have gone back to revisit the older games in the series. Oblivion Remastered was a pretty alright way to do that, even if it has been left in a sorry state without updates, but it may have only made us more reliant on modern touches in games, making it harder to go back to everything that came before.

Luckily, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind has an absurdly dedicated modding community, allowing you to add plenty of quality-of-life improvements to the game if you want to give it a go. And now, we have one that will definitely make Morrowind feel a lot more like Skyrim and Oblivion - because it adds the iconic radiant AI mechanics into the game.

Morrowind Mod For OpenMW Brings The NPCs To Life

The mod is a work in progress, but as you can see, it's already come a long way. Here, we can see NPCs run into one another and start conversations, as they would in Oblivion. Perhaps most importantly, they move around now, sticking to a schedule that involves sleeping at night, rather than staying in one spot 24/7.

Mod creator Liam Farley has outlined some of the intended features in the video's description. They also say that there will be an option to remove the audio files and replace them all with subtitles for a more vanilla-friendly experience - but there's something so charming about actually hearing the conversations. Better yet, they say that no AI-generated content has been used, with the dialogue being written by humans, and voice work being done by the community (and themself, as they recount "destroying" their voice trying to do a Dunmer accent).

This mod is for OpenMW. This is a fan-made engine you can use to play Morrowind in if you own the game, and it makes for a much more stable experience. The open source engine has its own modding community, giving you plenty of options if you want to play Morrowind this way. It is largely seen as the more reliable way to enjoy Morrowind now, since the base game is showing its age.
