Summary

  • Mortal Kombat 1's performance on PC hs seemingly tanked for a lot of players following the release of the game's latest update.
  • Some players are experiencing massive frame rate drops despite high-end specs, while others report gameplay going in slow motion.
  • Fixes right now include a fresh install, though there are hopes that NetherRealm will actually fix the issues going forward.

Mortal Kombat 1 might be overshadowed by the likes of Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and now Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, but developer NetherRealm Studios has been chugging along regardless. It's been releasing DLC and new characters for the title while making sure updates go out on a regular basis for balancing, but if the updates for PC continue to be as rough as the game's latest, NetherRealm might not have an audience on the platform for much longer.

According to several fans on social media, Mortal Kombat 1 has been suffering from pretty rough performance issues ever since the release of the game's latest update, which added the recently announced Khaos Reigns DLC. A Twitter user called Syribral was one of the first to start calling out NetherRealm for the shocking performance sharing a video of a match dropping to as low as 10fps.

To make matters worse, Syribral claims that they're running the game with a rig that's over the recommended specs, making this a problem with the game itself rather than a hardware issue. Another Twitter user called Thethiny then backs up Syribral's claims that the game's latest update has tanked its performance on PC, claiming that the update's attempts at file compression and a new file layout is likely the main cause of the issues displayed in the video.

Mortal Kombat 1 Fans Are Unhappy With PC Performance After Latest Update

You can find various other fans of the title complaining about similar issues, including a user called SithDestroyerOT, who claims their game keeps dropping to around 40fps despite running it on a 4080 Super. Concerns over performance have even started making their way to the game's Steam page, as you can find several negative reviews calling the game broken and unplayable.

It's worth noting that these experiences don't appear to be universal, at least not enough for them to make the entire Mortal Kombat community start grabbing their pitchforks. For example, a Twitter user called RainCola claims they haven't experienced the frame rate issues that everyone else has, and questions whether it could be a problem specific to AMD CPUs.

Either way, it's an issue that appears to be affecting a fairly sizable chunk of the game's PC audience, and there will be calls for NetherRealm to do something about it soon. Right now, it seems as though the best way to try and get around the issues is to do a fresh install, but it's not exactly ideal to have to delete your game and reinstall whenever an update gets pushed out. Here's hoping NetherRealm takes not and fixes the issues.
