Summary

  • The Switch 2 is almost here, and the hype for the upcoming Nintendo console cannot be higher.
  • As spotted on Reddit, Nintendo 64 games on Switch 2 will have some neat and nifty features come launch.
  • Among the listed features exclusive to Switch 2 include a CRT filter, as well as the ability to rewind games.

It might be hard to believe, but after all the waiting and speculation, we're finally in the home stretch when it comes to the Nintendo Switch 2. Beginning tomorrow, May 5, we'll be just one month out from the console's release. That's especially impressive considering it feels like yesterday when Nintendo held its dedicated Switch 2 Direct, where everything from upcoming games to the hardware itself was showcased.

Even then, fans are finding out new things left and right about the console, from the rather disappointing news about cloud saves when it comes to both Legend of Zelda titles to the feature that is 24 years in the making — a ZL button on the GameCube controller.

Next up: some rather neat features coming to Nintendo 64 games available on Nintendo Switch Online.

Don't Call It A Nintendo 64, It's Now A Nintendo 65

As first spotted on Reddit, and confirmed via Nintendo's own website, Nintendo 64 games available through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service will be more than emulated on the Switch 2.

Nintendo

When it comes to Nintendo 64 games on the Switch 2, you'll be able to add a CRT filter to give them a more classic retro feel, plus remap the buttons on the controller AND also rewind games if you made a mistake.

The CRT filter in particular should be of interest to players, especially those who grew up playing on CRTs. "CRT filter will work wonders for these games," one gamer wrote on Reddit. "Playing on a CRT really is the best way to experience them still, as they hide and mask a lot of the native N64 fuzziness."

A few other users noted that with the Switch 2's ability to process 4K imagery, it'll make for a more "convincing" CRT filter that the original Switch would not have been able to produce otherwise. The button remapping should come in clutch for some of the more complex titles, while the ability to rewind time is a feature that is often underrated when it comes to modernized retro titles.

All that is to say: June 5 cannot come any sooner.
