Even though there will technically be just one brand-new first-party Nintendo game launching with the Switch 2 on June 5, Mario Kart World, there will be a lot of exclusive stuff on the console come release day. That includes the addition of GameCube games to the NSO Expansion Pass, so ideally, you're going to want a compatible GameCube controller to play them.

The good news is that the Switch 2 has its own GameCube controller. The bad news is it has been notoriously hard to come by during the console's pre-order window. Every time Nintendo has added more stock to its online store, the controller has sold out almost immediately. However, today's restock seems to be sticking around, or at least that was the case at the time of publishing this article.

The Switch 2 GameCube controllers were restocked almost an hour before this article was published, and as it stands, I am still able to pre-purchase one through Nintendo. I don't even have to queue - what a time to be alive. There's no guarantee that enough people who desperately want these controllers now have them and they won't sell out again soon, just slightly slower, but it's a positive sign that things are already starting to become easier to find even though the Switch 2 hasn't launched yet.

It also means that, if you're reading this in time, you can now pre-order a Switch 2 GameCube controller of your own. There's not much to explain in terms of how it looks and what it does. The controller is almost identical to the original used to play GameCube games, with the addition of the Switch 2's infamous C button. Well, I guess it's not quite so infamous anymore now that we know what it does - open the console's GameChat function.

There is a potential downside to the Switch 2 GameCube controller depending on how you plan to use it. It was believed that it wouldn't function with non-GameCube games, striking fear into the hearts of those hoping to use it to play Metroid Prime 4. Nintendo has since confirmed that's not the case, but that there may be "issues" when trying to use it to play non-GameCube titles.

The launch of the Switch 2 is now less than two weeks away with the console swooping in to replace the original Switch as Nintendo's newest console on June 5, 2025.
