Most of the Dark Brotherhood quests you'll encounter in Oblivion Remastered will require that you maintain a certain level of discretion, especially as you gather information about your prey. However, Broken Vows changes the formula a bit, as your target, J'Ghasta, is aware of your presence and is ready for a fight.

In addition to your target's awareness, J'Ghasta also paid off the guards in town to ignore your brawl, so you can't rely on the NPCs to do your dirty work for you. Despite the changes and J'Ghasta's careful preparations, there's a smart way to avoid a fight altogether and easily dispatch J'Ghasta.

How To Start Broken Vows

Close

Immediately after you've dispatched the Draconis family and completed Next Of Kin, you'll begin Broken Vows, which tasks you with heading to Bruma to track down J'Ghasta.

Unfortunately for you, your target has gotten wind that someone might be coming and paid off the guards to ignore your fight if it spills into the streets.

It looks like this target heard about our Frenzy spell antics that got the Draconis family killed and ensured we can't do it again.

How To Easily Kill J'Ghasta

With this in mind, head to Bruma, where you'll find J'Ghasta's house in the southern section of the city, directly adjacent to Brotch Calus' house.

Enter J'Ghasta's house under the shroud of night (ideally after midnight)to give yourself the advantage. If you arrive in the middle of the night, you won't see anyone around when you enter, as J'Ghasta seems to be missing. Don't worry, he's not.

Walk downstairs and look in the corner underneath some folded clothes to find a Trap Door to the Secret Training Room. Enter and sneak into the room where you'll find J'Ghasta sleeping.

Sneak attack to get a huge advantage, and finish him off quickly before he can fully wake up and counterattack.

With careful movement, you'll defeat this foe before he has the chance to deal any damage, and you won't have to worry about a potentially difficult fight.

Where To Find The Black Hand Set

If you haven't already gotten it, open the very hard lock on the keg in the downstairs area before you enter J'Ghasta's secret training room to get a Black Hand Robe and Black Hand Hood. Wonder why that's in there.

The Robe fortifies the following skills by 11 points, while the Hood fortifies them by four points:

  • Sneak
  • Illusion
  • Marksman
  • Blade
  • Speechcraft

With J'Ghasta taken care of, head to the Old Bridge to the south of the Imperial City, directly below the Waterfront District.

What Rewards Do You Get From Broken Vows?

Once there, check the small area below the bridge in a Rotten Box to collect the following:

  • A 500 gold reward
  • Your fourth set of Dead Drop Orders

Picking up this reward immediately begins the next quest, Final Justice.
