If you want to be the most efficient thief possible in Oblivion Remastered, then you'll need to learn the nuances of looting as a discerning criminal. The best items to steal in Oblivion Remastered strike the ideal balance between their value and weight. Since you are limited by your carry weight capacity, you'll need to decide which items are worth your valuable space.

After stealing thousands of gold's worth of items for the Thieves Guild, the most lucrative items to steal and sell are clear. Expert thieves don't have time to delay, so we've compiled a list of the most valuable items you can steal and sell to Thieves Guild fences without being over-encumbered.

8 Staves

Staves (or 'Staffs' as our friend Rindir in the Market District would say) are one of the best pieces of enchanted gear that you can steal in Oblivion Remastered. While most enchanted weapon and armor pieces can take up a significant fraction of your weight, staves have a weight of ten, and typically carry values in the hundreds if not thousands of gold Septims.

Remember that you can't sell stolen goods to regular merchants, so you should join the Thieves Guild before you go on a rampage.

You can typically fit several more staves in your pack as opposed to trying to steal heavy armor pieces that can eat up anywhere between 20 and 60 weight units each.

7 Books

Books are an interesting case, as they're nowhere near the most valuable item to steal in Oblivion Remastered, but their low maximum weights make them well worth nabbing on your way out the door. Most books have a value of two to ten gold, but some rarer books can cost somewhere in the 20 to 75 gold range.

In addition to their sale values, certain training books can also increase your skills by one point each, depending on the book. Get into the habit of picking up any book with a value above 20, as these books are worth stealing for resale and might even offer you a bonus to your skills if you're lucky.

6 Soul Gems

Maintaining a steady supply of Soul Gems, especially the elusive Grand Soul Gem variants, can be difficult, but stealing them and reselling them for massive profits is one of the easiest ways to make gold in the game. If you haven't joined the Mages Guild, you can steal these valuable items from any Mages Guild Hall in Cyrodiil.

If you're struggling to fence enough gold in the Thieves Guild, waiting until nighttime to steal every Soul Gem in any Mages Guild Hall is one of the quickest ways to hit all the thresholds.

Soul Gems typically weigh less than one unit, and even stacking up a hundred of these magical artifacts won't weigh you down as much as certain two-handed weapons or heavy armor pieces will.

5 Alcohol/Potions

Much like Soul Gems, alcohol and potions are another low-cost option if you're looking for weight to fence more items and advance your Independent Thievery quest. Alcohol can weigh one unit, while most potions weigh 0.5 units, so these are another set of items that you can collect by the dozens without fear of filling up your pack.

If you want to maximize your time, you should focus more on stealing potions from Mages Guild Halls and vendors, like The Gilded Carafe in the Imperial City Market District. Potions can also be extremely useful in combat if you want to keep some for yourself, as you won't have to worry about traveling with stolen merchandise if you just use it.

4 Jewelry

Speaking of items you can either use or sell once stolen, jewelry offers another extremely high value-to-weight ratio, making it another item type you can easily steal in bulk without needing to travel to a fence to unload. Unfortunately, most jewelry is kept behind display cases or in boxes, so you'll need to up your lockpicking game to get access.

While jewelry is purely decorative, these items are great to enchant if you're building a character focused on a certain skill or ability. Rings and necklaces are typically easy to swap in and out, but the limit of two ring equipment slots means that you're better off selling the items you probably won't use.

3 Spell Scrolls

Spell scrolls are one of the best items to steal thanks to their low weight, decent range of values, and excellent usefulness in practical situations. While the value of a scroll depends upon the spell it casts, there's almost no reason to pass on stealing these for easy profit.

While these scrolls offer great opportunities to practice the various schools of magic, if you haven't bought many spells, their one-time uses make them better as commodities.

2 Lockpicks

Lockpicks are one of the best items you can steal, not because of their value but due to their practical application as a necessary tool to break locks. Even if you're not a member of the Thieves Guild, lockpicking is one of the most important skills to learn if you want to collect some of the best loot.

Furthermore, stolen lockpicks usually aren't at risk of being confiscated by guards, as you're likely to use and break any stolen picks before ever being caught or arrested.

1 Gold

Stealing gold is the perfect crime in Oblivion Remastered because individual gold pieces can't be marked as stolen, so you'll never have stolen gold confiscated by guards. Since you won't need to worry about selling stolen gold to a fence, you can steal as much as you want, then immediately head to a shop to buy some of their best gear.

Gold's instant use as a currency, the lack of confiscation concerns, and its nonexistent weight value make gold the most helpful item to steal in Oblivion Remastered, so search locked chests for larger sums of gold than you'll find on desks and tables.
