Summary
- Okami 2 was just announced at The Game Awards, with original director Hideki Kamiya returning.
- It's been 18 years since the first game launched on PS2, but it'll still be "some time" before we find out more concrete details.
Capcom just announced at The Game Awards 2024 that, after 18 years, an Okami sequel is finally happening.
Not much else was shared about the game other than the fact it exists, but it was revealed that original director Hideki Kamiya, who also directed classics such as Resident Evil 2, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry, is returning for the sequel.
The original Okami followed Amaterasu, a protector deity inhabiting the body of a white wolf, using the Celestial Brush to push back the darkness and bring life to the world.
In the very brief eight second reveal trailer, we see Amaterasu return, bringing life to the plains with a flurry of flowers as they run through the grass. It even ends with the iconic brush, so we can expect a pretty faithful follow-up it looks like.
To that end, Kamiya isn't the only original creative to return, as Capcom revealed that the sequel is being "co-developed between studios that include various staff members of the original" (via its official website).
It Will Be "Some Time" Before We Find Out More About Okami 2
'Okami 2' — which doesn't currently have a title — is clearly very early on in development. So, it'll likely be a while before we hear anything more concrete about this long-awaited sequel.

Okami turns 15 years old today in North America, and I've never been quite as enchanted by anything else.
PostsAll Capcom has to say for now is that "It will be some time before we greet you again, but we really hope you look forward to this project." Its mere existence was enough to be a huge, showstopping announcement, and it's been nearly 20 years, so what's a little longer?
