Baldur's Gate 3 Fan Discovers Cut NPC That Swindles Your Gold
Summary
- Baldur's Gate 3 is full of trickery, yet the Druid Grove originally had even more scammers than just those annoying Tiefling children.
- One cut NPC, Nerela, posed as a widow in need of financial help to enter Baldur's Gate, but was actually trying to scam players.
- Quite why she was cut is unknown, though it's possible Larian felt bad about scamming players so many times in quick succession. Not even Larian is that cruel.
Baldur's Gate 3 is trying to trick you almost constantly, and you'll have more than likely fallen for one of these tricks either unintentionally, or down to the luck of the dice (I'm not talking to you, save scummers). It's pretty unrelenting too, as one of the hubs of activity you come across in the game is the Druid Grove in Act 1.
On your first trip into the Druid Grove, you most likely got scammed by Mattis, a little Tiefling boy who robs you of your possessions and gives you a resulting side quest to get them back. That was already a hassle for the majority of players, who likely stumbled into the Tiefling Hideout and got jailed for the trouble, but it turns out the Druid Grove originally had another scammer out to swindle you.
Baldur's Gate 3 Fan Discovers Cut NPC That Swindles Your Gold
First discovered by a YouTuber called SlimX (thanks PC Gamer), this Tiefling is called Nerela, and was to be found looking all sad next to a wooden music box that played a sweet little tune. Upon finding Nerela, she'd tell you that the music box she was playing was a treasured family item that was made by her husband to try and quiet their daughter, both of whom were supposedly killed by a pack of gnolls.
Nerela would have then told you that she needs to sell the music box to enter Baldur's Gate, as she believes the only way to get in is to give bribes that she can't afford to the guards. Being the kind and noble Tav that you are, you could have offered Nerela some cash to stop her from selling the music box, and you'd get chastised by the cold, unfeeling Shadowheart as a result. Unfortunately, it's better to be cold and unfeeling in this case.

The Blade of Frontiers deserves so much better.
Posts 1If you chose to inspect the box that she's holding and passed an Insight check, you'd be able to tell that she's fibbing and call out her story, or you can just call her music box a pile of junk. After that, Nerela completely drops her act and reveals that she was scamming you, and you would be able to confiscate her box to stop her schemes, or give her gold anyway.
Unfortunately, we have no idea why this little interaction with Nerela was cut, though it's possible it was to save space, or to make sure the player didn't get scammed out of their possessions back to back. Not even Baldur's Gate 3 should be that cruel.
