2024 won't go down as a historic year for the first-person shooter genre, as not many huge FPS games were released. It certainly won't be as well-remembered as the likes of 2007, which had Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Bioshock. Yet, just because it wasn't a banner year for the genre doesn't mean it was a terrible one.

Nobody is going to call Starship Troopers: Extermination an all-time classic first-person shooter, but it is still fun. It's part of the Starship Troopers franchise, which contains a novel, movies, TV shows, and video games. Yet, there isn't much to the story of this game, so prior knowledge of the series isn't needed to enjoy it. All you need is a love of killing oversized creatures.

While there is a single-player campaign, this is a game that's more about online play. The said online play has you and 15 other players defending yourselves against a lot of creatures. There are so many beasts, in fact, that things get hectic and chaotic very quickly. That is what makes it enjoyable to play.

The first thing you will notice about Sulfur is its unique and eye-catching art style that looks fairly wholesome until you start gunning enemies down with a range of different weapons.

Speaking of weapons, they're among the best aspects of this action-adventure FPS. Most of them feel really fun to shoot, and you can alter them with different mods. Not only do these mods functionally alter the weapons, but their changes are also visual. There is also a bit of inventory management in the game, and you're encouraged to use a fair amount of strategy during battle. So, this isn't a mindless FPS.

It's always a bit tricky for a popular game series to release a VR entry when the others aren't VR games. After all, not every fan of the series is going to have the ability to play virtual reality games. Plus, the developers typically have to mess with the series formula a bit to make the game work as a VR title. That said, Awakening is a solid addition to the Metro series and one of the best VR games in recent memory.

It takes place before the other games in the series and follows the journey of a doctor who attempts to reunite with his wife in the Moscow tunnel system. Despite the inclusion of virtual reality, it still manages to maintain the level of storytelling and atmosphere the series is known for.

Echo Point Nova is an open-world FPS game that can be played both alone or with friends. Either way, you get to experience quite a trippy game that has a great art style and varied gameplay.

It's the sort of title where you're expected to be in perpetual motion as you glide around the battlefield, eliminating people. However, you don't just run around. You can slide, grapple, and jump around in the middle of combat. This is where the real greatness of the title comes from, as the traversal feels very nice.

Few other FPS games in 2024 were as visually impressive as Bodycam. Simply put, it looks real. The game has ultra-realistic graphics that make it look like bodycam footage.

From a technical standpoint, this is very impressive, but it can also be a little unsettling when you start gunning people down in this multiplayer shooter. Yes, there are gorier games, but seeing people die in this title is more harrowing because of how real it looks. If you can get over that, though, you will be able to appreciate the unique and engaging shooting mechanics.

The DLC revolves around the protagonist - or a team of protagonists - attempting to hunt down the major villain known as The Witness before they wipe everyone out. The storyline is intriguing, while the combat remains as smooth and fun as Destiny has become known for. Stalker 2 takes place in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, a contaminated area created by the famous Chornobyl nuclear disaster. It's a bleak place filled with people simply trying to survive. This includes you because Stalker 2 is not just an FPS game. It's also an open-world survival title.

The setting is a difficult place to survive, considering it contains plenty of mutated creatures and morally questionable people. In real life, it would be a terrible location to visit, but in video game form, it's a great setting that's very detailed and atmospheric. The game's gunplay is solid, too, and the story isn't bad. Overall, it's a decent first-person shooter.

There have been so many Call of Duty games by this point that it's hard for many to truly stand out. Yet, Black Ops 6 is different from many in recent memory. This is mainly due to its campaign.

It moves away from traditional Call of Duty missions to include things like stealth missions and horror scenes. Of course, moving into other genres isn't necessarily a good thing, but the missions are generally very well-designed. Plus, the shooting mechanics are solid and satisfying, like in every Call of Duty game.
