Sykes Expected A Kojima Lawsuit
In our exclusive interview with Bring Me The Horizon frontman Oli Sykes, we discussed the singer's love for the Metal Gear franchise and his respect for Kojima.
After sharing his love stories for the games, Sykes told me that "Drop Dead, my clothing company, used to be like straight-up Foxhound t-shirts," adding, "And then when we did Shadow Moses, we didn't get any clearance to use the intro music and stuff."
With Shadow Moses released over 11 years ago when BMTH wasn't such a household name, Sykes assumed he could get away with borrowing from Kojima; however, things changed when a former Metal Gear developer contacted the band: "She was a fan of Bring Me," Sykes said, and after a few conversations, "she was like, 'I've shown Yoji, Shadow Moses,' and I'm like, 'Oh my God, we're going to get caught with an injunction.'"
Oh my God, we're going to get caught with an injunction.
Fortunately for the band, things worked out for the best. The Metal Gear dev told Sykes that Kojima and Co. loved the song, meaning lawsuits were avoided, and new alliances were formed.
Although Sykes admitted that they weren't Kojima's favorite band from the outset, the two fostered a relationship that led to Bring Me The Horizon creating Ludens for Death Stranding. However, the ball was very much in BMTH's court for that song, with Sykes saying, "I don't know how much Hiddey even really listened or cared about it; he was probably really extremely busy at the time."
What the song did do for the band, though, was make Kojima "slowly realize how much we genuinely do f*ck with what he does and are massive, massive fans."
Bring Me The Horizon’s POST HUMAN: NeX GEn is out now, with the physical release coming on September 27.
