The hype for Halo: Campaign Evolved felt pretty high this time last week. That hype now feels like it has fallen through a trapdoor, not just because of the PS Plus debacle, but because fans of the series don't like how the Halo looks in the remake.

A six-hour video of Campaign Evolved's Halo menu, complete with haunting and instantly recognizable Halo music, was added to the series' YouTube channel. Not only does it give you some non-stop nostalgic video game ambience to work or fall asleep to, but it also gives us our best look yet at the remake's Halo.

Halo's Remade Halo Doesn't Look As Good

Bad news on that, I'm afraid. People don't like it, and I can see why. By the very nature of Campaign Evolved being a remake, everything in the game is going to be more detailed. That includes the Halo on which most of the game takes place. The problem with the remade Halo that fans have now identified is that all that extra detail has washed away a lot of its scale and aura.

The Halo after which the series is made is effectively a planet-sized ring. As you can see in the image of the original Halo shared by ReactionaryLuma, that scale is perfectly captured. As you look up at the Halo, you can see tiny dots of light on its outer shell. Presumably rooms, maybe even entire buildings, that feel like they're thousands of miles away.

You can also see the Halo's land masses and oceans from that perspective, similar to what you'd see if you were in space looking down at the Earth. Even though Campaign Evolved's Halo is shot and framed from the same position as that snapshot of the original, it just doesn't give off that same feeling.

It Doesn't Have The Same Aura

There aren't hundreds of tiny dots on its outer shell that look like buildings which make up a massive space city. The additional detail the remake gives it just makes the Halo look like a big mechanical ring floating in space. The land masses on the inside of the Halo also aren't quite as distinct, taking away the feeling that you're looking down on something Earth-sized or bigger.

JonnyEthco highlights that the speed at which we're being shown the Halo in the new six-hour video also doesn't help. Considering how big the structure is, the camera would have to be moving at an incredible speed to showcase it in that way. It just makes the whole thing feel smaller, which isn't great.

It doesn't help that these complaints come on the heels of a Halo PS Plus controversy that has dominated gaming news over the weekend. During a Q&A, it was claimed both players will need to have PS Plus if they want to play Campaign Evolved's local co-op together on PS5. That has since been corrected. However, both players will still need to have PlayStation and Microsoft accounts. Having to sign in to four accounts just to play local co-op isn't that much better than needing to have PS Plus.
