Chained Echoes, an indie JRPG heavily inspired by several games that launched throughout the 1990s, wears its inspirations on its sleeve, with plenty of airships, mechs, magic, monsters, and more. Because of Chained Echoes' availability on most modern platforms, it may be either your first foray into the world of retro-style JRPGs or the nostalgic experience you've been waiting for.

Depending on how much you enjoyed your playthrough, you might be curious about the various games it was inspired by, and luckily, most of them are easily accessible, but for those that aren't, there are some related modern games.

8 Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is a turn-based JRPG that first launched for the Super Nintendo in 1995. Despite its fame, it has only been ported to the original PlayStation, Nintendo DS, PSP, PlayStation 3, PC, and mobile devices, so it isn't quite as accessible as fans would expect by now.

Featuring character designs by Dragon Quest artist and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, Chrono Trigger follows Crono as he goes on an adventure through time to change the course of history, meeting various intriguing characters and gaining new party members along the way. You can also choose whether you want to use an Active Time Battle system in combat or have battles be more traditionally turn-based.

7 Chrono Cross

An indirect sequel to Chrono Trigger that's much more accessible than its predecessor due to the remastered Radical Dreamers edition, Chrono Cross opts for a different art style than Chrono Trigger and has the main character, Serge, and the others who join his party along the way, traveling through different dimensions rather than different time periods.

Chrono Cross is also known for its relatively large amount of party members, with over 40 to recruit. Due to being an enhanced remaster, the Radical Dreamers edition features enhanced HD graphics, battle system tweaks, the ability to toggle enemy encounters on and off, and a handful of other improvements expected in most modern remasters.

6 Tactics Ogre Reborn

A tactical JRPG rather than a party-based one, Tactics Ogre Reborn is an enhanced port of the 2010 PSP title Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together, a remake of the 1995 Tactics Ogre game for the original PlayStation. Tactics Ogre Reborn takes place in a seemingly peaceful world, but many are prepared for war to break out at any time due to ongoing tension between nations.

With the rise of a new conflict, the nations go to war again, determining the world's fate. Tactics Ogre Reborn features revamped enemy AI, an improved level management system, faster battles, an auto-save feature, and fully voiced cutscenes in both English and Japanese, which is a first for the series.

5 Final Fantasy 6

Once known as Final Fantasy 3 in North America, Final Fantasy 6 is one of the series' most beloved games and perhaps the most popular Final Fantasy title from the Super Nintendo era. Final Fantasy 6 takes place in a world where magic is gone, with humanity relying on technology instead until the mysterious main character Tera appears.

Despite its age, Final Fantasy 6 still has the largest number of party members, with 14 total and 15 guest characters. Several versions of Final Fantasy 6 are considered the best depending on who you ask, but the easiest way to play it is on mobile devices or PC.

4 Dragon Quest 11 S

Dragon Quest 11 S Echoes of an Elusive Age is an enhanced version of Dragon Quest 11 that features a plethora of additional content not available in the original game. As the Luminary, you and your party must save the great kingdom of Erdrea from being conquered by evil.

Besides the traditional turn-based combat that has become a staple of mainline Dragon Quest titles, Dragon Quest 11 S also features expanded character stories, side quests and mini-games, and the Draconian Quest difficulty. Most interestingly, Dragon Quest 11 S also features a 16-bit retro mode if you prefer a more classic Dragon Quest experience.

3 Phantasy Star 4

The fourth game in the Phantasy Star series and the last from the Sega Genesis era, Phantasy Star 4: The End Of The Millennium, is often regarded by fans as the best of the four classic Phantasy Star games.

Taking place in the Algol star system on the desert planet of Motavia, Phantasy Star 4 sees a hunter named Chaz go from completing a simple mission to joining with others to defeat the great evil that threatens the star system. Phantasy Star 4 has all the series staples, including turn-based combat, different skills for characters to learn, vehicle combat, and a party talk feature to get to know characters better.

2 Star Ocean First Departure R

A remake of Star Ocean First Departure for the PSP, which was a portable remake of the Star Ocean game for the Super Nintendo, Star Ocean First Departure R brings the game into the modern era with HD graphics, new in-game character illustrations by artist Katsumi Enami, rebalanced battle gameplay, and more.

Star Ocean stars Ratix, Dorn, and Milly as they go on an adventure to save their medieval town from a mysterious illness, discovering characters from a more advanced civilization along the way and learning to work together with them. Instead of being turn-based, Star Ocean features real-time combat, but unlike later games in the series, only Ratix is controlled by the player.

1 Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Despite the number three in the title, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is actually the fifth game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. Although some aspects connect it to its predecessors, and it is set after them, they don't need to be played beforehand to understand the game's story.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 stars a party of soldiers from the nations of Keves and Agnus, led by dual protagonists Noah and Mio as they liberate colonies throughout the world of Aionos. While there are six main party members, there are also 19 heroes — characters who can be recruited through various methods to assist the party in battle.
