Summary

  • Hideo Kojima just casually revealed a second Death Stranding adaptation is in the works.
  • The Death Stranding director announced an anime take on the game is currently in production.
  • That's in addition to the live-action adaptation being worked on by A24.

There's a lot for Death Stranding fans to be excited about right now. Death Stranding 2 is less than a month away, and Hideo Kojima is working with A24 on a Death Stranding movie adaptation. Turns out there's also a third Death Stranding project in the works that Kojima just casually announced as if we all knew about it already.

The Metal Gear Solid designer sat down with Vogue Japan (thanks, VGC) to talk all things Death Stranding with the sequel's arrival on the horizon. The conversation naturally drifted onto how Kojima is getting on with the Death Stranding movie. Kojima heaped praise on The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie for their different approaches to adapting video games for a whole new audience.

However, the Kojima Productions boss noted that he's aiming for the Death Stranding adaptation to take a different approach. "I am aiming to make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival," Kojima said, so potentially a version of the first game's story that even those of us who have played it will be unfamiliar with.

There's A Death Stranding Adaptation In The Works

No, Not That One, Another One

It was after setting the bar for his movie incredibly high that Kojima casually revealed an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is also in the works. "We are also currently working on an anime adaptation." That was it. That's all Kojima had to say about something that will potentially be pretty fantastic.

I'm not sure how you turn Death Stranding into an anime, nor did Kojima mention who exactly is helping him transform his Game of the Year winner into an anime at the same time as he and A24 are working on a live-action Death Stranding movie. I'm not sure whether Kojima has any connections with Netflix, but that might be the place to go. The streaming platform has a terrific track record when it comes to helping turn video games into anime series with Arcane, Castlevania, Cyberpunk's Edgerunners, and now Devil May Cry on its resume.

Kojima is a very busy man. Although work on Death Stranding 2 will almost be done at this stage, the designer is currently working on two other games - OD, and Physint, the latter of which he recently revealed is still roughly six years away. With two more Death Stranding projects also active, the next time we see something new from Kojima might be when one of his proteges uses the ideas he has left for them on a USB in the event of his passing.
