Summary

  • October 4 marks the first anniversary of Detective Pikachu Returns, which launched on the Switch last year.
  • That might not seem exciting, but an official Pokemon account on Twitter is teasing news to go along with that date.
  • It's not clear in the slightest what that news might end up being, but it could be to do with the Detective Pikachu movie sequel.

The official Japanese Detective Pikachu account is teasing "exciting news" on October 4 to celebrate the first anniversary of Detective Pikachu Returns.

Although most Pokemon fans have their hopes solely set on eventually learning more about Pokemon Legends Z-A before it launches in 2025, there's still been a whole lot going on with the series over the past few months, such as the first previews for Pokemon TCG Pocket being shared. Even if we're likely not hearing about Z-A until the Switch 2 is unveiled, there is at least some Pokemon news to look forward to.

As pointed out by GamesRadar+ and originally spotted by ComicBook, the official Japanese Pokemon account on Twitter, Poke Times, recently released a tweet pointing out the impending first anniversary of Detective Pikachu Returns on October 4. While a simple anniversary might not seem that exciting, the account also teased some "exciting news" to celebrate the occasion.

Detective Pikachu Is Getting Some "Exciting News" On Its Anniversary

The official account didn't say much more about what the anniversary news might be beyond calling it "exciting", which has fittingly made it a mystery worthy of Detective Pikachu. Considering the tweet is specifically pointing out the anniversary of Detective Pikachu Returns, it seems very likely it has to do with the game itself and not the wider Detective Pikachu franchise.

As for what that news might be, it's really anyone's guess. Nintendo could be planning on adding some kind of DLC or post-launch content to the game, or the Twitter account could just be hyping up a new piece of merchandise for the series. It's really not clear right now, and it might not even have anything to do with Detective Pikachu Returns.

If I were a betting man, I'd say that a likely outcome is the first Detective Pikachu game (which launched on the 3DS) getting a Nintendo Switch port to celebrate the sequel's anniversary.

It's possible that the announcement might have something to do with the Detective Pikachu movie sequel, which was confirmed to be in the works some time ago and has had nothing said about it since. That seems like a stretch considering how huge that announcement would be for what is just an anniversary tweet, but stranger things have happened.
