Square Enix President Says To Wait A Little Longer For Official Dragon Quest 12 News
During a recent investor's call, Square Enix carefully dodged a question about Dragon Quest 12's troubled development that led to it being rebooted, asking us all to wait "a little longer" for updates.
As anyone who screamed at both the announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4 last month will know, Square Enix has been on a bit of a roll with big announcements lately. Before giving us a glimpse at those two, though, Square finally shared an update on Dragon Quest 12 for the series' 40th anniversary.
That big update confirmed that the reason we've been waiting so long for Dragon Quest 12 is that a troubled development cycle led to it being completely rebooted from The Flames of Fate to Beyond Dreams. The drastic tone shift was a massive surprise and left everyone wondering what possibly could have happened, but you probably shouldn't count on actually finding out.
Square Enix Masterfully Avoids Question About Dragon Quest 12's Troubled Development
It Wants To Share Updates At A Time That Makes "The Most Sense"
As pointed out by Twitter user Stealth40k, Square Enix was recently directly asked about Dragon Quest 12's surprising reboot during its annual shareholder meeting. The surprisingly brutal question highlighted Dragon Quest 12's development and its notable vibe change, before asking what the circumstances were behind the decision to "essentially waste the development costs" from The Flames of Fate.

Posts By Andrew KingIn response to the point about Beyond Dreams' shift in tone, Square Enix said that it shares the idea of "generating a ripple effect from a game" that's meant for a specific target audience. After that, Square pointed out that major announcements have a "major impact" on the company, so it wants to share updates when it makes "the most sense" for marketing and "ultimately contributes to our earnings".
Square also noted that everyone will need to "wait a little while longer" for updates on the release timing for Beyond Dreams. At least it doesn't sound too far off.
What you've probably noticed by now is that Square completely avoided the very specific question about what happened during Dragon Quest 12's development to require such a big reboot. All we know at the moment is that there were "hurdles", and it doesn't seem like Square is planning on telling us more any time soon.
