EA Sports FC might have dropped its FIFA license since the last tournament, but it didn’t lose the ability to accurately predict World Cup winners. The series called that Spain would win the 2026 World Cup before a ball had been kicked, which means it has now accurately predicted the winner from each of the last five World Cups.

It’s a streak that has now gone on for so long that it has officially moved from impressive to creepy. Ahead of every World Cup since Spain’s last win in 2010, EA has simulated the tournament, previously in FIFA, now in EA Sports FC, in its latest game. This year, it used EA Sports FC 26, sharing a few days ahead of the tournament that Spain would eventually lift the trophy.

That is, indeed, what happened. It went right down to the wire and required extra time, but Spain eventually broke through Argentina’s defenses on Sunday, a single goal separating the two. EA Sports FC said Spain would win, which means its perfect record continues.

At the last World Cup in 2022, the final time that a game under the FIFA banner would be used to predict the outcome of a FIFA World Cup, the tournament simulation correctly guessed that Argentina would outlast the competition. In 2018, it rightly pegged France to win, that Germany would be World Champions in 2014, and that Spain would win the most prestigious prize in international football for the first time in the nation’s history in 2010.

All eyes were on the series’ World Cup simulations after it managed to make it four in a row. Now that it's five, I imagine there will be more attention than ever when the official EA Sports FC simulation is run ahead of the 2030 World Cup in four years. It’s difficult to surmise just how unlikely it is to have accurately predicted five World Cup winners in a row, but suffice to say those odds will be astronomical.

Especially when, even though Spain is always a threat, the 2010 winners weren’t exactly the favorites to repeat what they achieved in 2010. Teams like France, England, and Argentina almost certainly had better odds to win it all before the tournament began. Seems we should have been listening to EA and not the oddsmakers, and we’d have known Spain was destined to win the entire time. Bookmark this article and set an alarm for June 1, 2030.
