The legend of the backrooms has been circulating on the internet for years, inspiring several stories, games, and, most recently, a film called Backrooms. To go alongside the release of this A24 film that focuses on the same concept, Escape The Backrooms has expanded to consoles, so everyone can take a shot at surviving the twisting, dangerous, never-ending corridors themselves.
In addition to adding Escape The Backrooms to Xbox and PlayStation, a crossplay patch has also launched on the Steam version, allowing players across consoles and PC to enjoy the game together. The best part? You don't even need to create a third-party account to utilize it.
How To Enable Crossplay For PC And Console
If you're hoping to play with friends on a different platform, you'll first need to ensure everyone has crossplay enabled. It should be the default setting, but PC players who owned the game before the patch especially should double-check their settings.
Anyone playing on PC also needs to ensure their game has been updated to version 1.3.0 or later. This is the patch that initially included crossplay.
To find this setting, open the settings menu from the main menu and tab over to the 'game' option. There, you should find an option for enabling crossplay. If this setting is not already enabled, you will need to turn it on.
Alternatively, if you aren't playing with friends and are joining random rooms and don't want crossplay enabled, you can turn it off here at any point.
As long as everything was done correctly, when you start either hosting or joining a game, you should get a notification that alerts you to the fact that crossplay is active.

If you're the one who is going to be hosting the room for everyone, then from the main menu, you'll want to select the 'new game' option. Here, you'll have the option to select between two modes: Story Mode and The Hub.
- Story Mode: This mode starts you at the beginning of the game, where you and your party will have to progress and solve puzzles naturally to finish the game.
- The Hub: This mode will give you the option of selecting a level and is great for quick sessions where you want to play your favorite levels or unlock missed achievements.
In addition to selecting the game mode you'd like to play, you'll also need to adjust privacy and room size. If you have specific friends joining you, then you'll want to mark it private so you receive a specific code that your friends can input. Otherwise, your room will appear in public lobbies for anyone to join.
Once you've set that, adjust the room to the number of players you'll be playing with. The max in the game currently is four players, but there are mods that PC players can utilize to increase this limit.
If you're playing solo, you'll still have to create a room, but you'll just mark it private and set the player count to one.
The next screen will be a waiting room where you'll be able to see your room code in the top right corner of the screen. This is the code you'll need to share with friends so they can join, and as they join, you should see their names pop up on the left side of the screen.
If you're playing on Story Mode, you'll need to select a difficulty level before starting the game, and if you're on Hub Mode, then you'll need to select the individual level you'd like to play.
How To Join A Game
For those who aren't hosting the game themselves, you'll have a much easier process. From the main menu, all you need to do is select the option to join a game, and you'll be brought to a screen that shows public lobbies. Here, you can join a public lobby if you'd like, or enter the code for a private game.
