Final Fantasy 6 Fan Is Remaking The Game In The Style Of Tactics
Final Fantasy 6 and Final Fantasy Tactics are widely regarded as two of the best games in the entire franchise, and for good reason. Both of them have incredible stories with iconic villains, engaging combat, memorable moments, and terrific writing, yet only one of the has received a remake so far.
Final Fantasy 6 has cropped up many times when discussions surrounding which Final Fantasy games should be remade, and while nothing has materialized just yet, you just know that modders are around the corner doing what the community wants most. While it not be a remake as visually impressive as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, one modder has put their own spin on the the definition of "remake."
Final Fantasy 6 Has Been Remade As A Tactics Game
First spotted by GamesRadar, a modder by the name of Conman first started work on a remake of Final Fantasy 6 in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics over three years ago, and has been steadily working on the project ever since. You can see a number of videos have been uploaded to the modder's YouTube channel, showing off that it's being built based on the original FF Tactics rather than the remake.
However, if you're expecting the mod to follow the plot of the story to the letter, you may be a little disappointed. To try and ease the stress of fully remaking a game with all of its systems, Conman has instead opted to just remake the battles in Final Fantasy 6, calling it a "battle rush style" of remake. With that in mind, you'll probably have to know the story of FF6 before you dive in.
Each of Final Fantasy 6's characters have been lovingly recreated and given their own strengths and skills based on how they play in the original Final Fantasy 6. Terra, Edgar, Celes, Sabin, Shadow, Cyan, Strago and Locke are all main characters while Mog, Umaro and Banon will all appear as guest characters.
Terra and Celes will have more of an emphasis on magic abilities, while Locke has several abilities that allow him to steal from enemies, and Edgar's attacks will all be linked to different weapons.
It's not quite finished just yet, as Conman is still tinkering around with it, deciding whether to add new battles and abilities, but a new update for the mod was released not too long ago, which added several battles including the fight Kefka is the World of Ruin. You can find the mod on the Final Fantasy Hacktics website, along with a nice list of credits, detailing everyone that worked on the project.
I've not dived in myself just yet, but I'd love to see how Conman recreates certain iconic fights like the train or the many, many fights with Ultros. We might be waiting a while for an official Final Fantasy 6 Remake, but this is a pretty cool project to follow if you want to play the game in a different way while you wait.
