Final Fantasy 8 - Tomb Of The Unknown King Quest Walkthrough
The Tomb of the Unknown King is a dungeon in Final Fantasy 8 that you must enter to progress the main story; this area is also tied to a side quest to complete for some great rewards, but this is a tricky labyrinth to navigate.

This dungeon's gimmick is that it has copy-pasted hallways and screens, making it very easy to get lost if you're not paying attention. There is a map for this area so you can get the lay of the land, but it can't show your current location in real-time. The main goal of being here is to grab a Student ID number, but you will be rewarded if you delve deeper and clear the entire dungeon.
Tomb Of The Unknown King - Finding The Student ID
Heading northeast from Deling City will eventually get you to the entrance to the Tomb of the Unknown King. The Landmark you’re looking for is at the very edge of the current area. Head into it from the overworld and make your way through the door at the top of the screen. Inside the tomb, run up one screen to see a sword lying on the floor just before a multi-path junction ahead of you. This sword has the Student ID number you need.
If you're playing Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, you can remove random encounters without having the skill from Diablo.
We recommend doing this as it will make it easier to navigate the labyrinth and ensures you won't lose your place.
Interact with the sword to reveal a Student ID number, which you've been asked to retrieve by the Caraway Guard. This ID is different for each save, so make a note of it by taking a screenshot or writing it down.
In our case, the number was 102. With this, you can return to Deling City and give this number to the guard to progress the story. However, you'll want to complete this side dungeon for the Brothers Guardian Force (GF) and two Triple Triad Cards.
Tomb Of The Unknown King - How To Find Sacred Boss Fight
To navigate through the dungeon, you need to know the correct route. Heading through the wrong path will result in losing your position, making it surprisingly difficult to gather your bearings afterwards. Because of this, we recommend saving the game outside the tomb before exploring in case you can't find your way back out.
The first place you're heading to is a boss fight which will start a boss battle with a bull enemy called Sacred. In the room with the sword on the floor, follow this route to get to Sacred:
- Right.
- Right.
- Right.
Once you've taken the third right, follow the path and you'll come to a room where Sacred is standing on top of a large glowing pedestal. Before you fight, ensure you have characters with the Draw ability, as you'll want to grab some spells from him. The fight is fairly straightforward; utilise your GFs and use Wind magic since he is weak to that element. Defeating him will cause him to flee and open a new path in the dungeon. The next step will be to head towards the floodgates to open up more areas.
You'll want to Draw as many Shell, Protect and Lifes as you can from Sacred since these spells are useful for GF Junction.
Tomb Of The Unknown King - Finding The Floodgate
Leave the chamber you fought Sacred and follow the hallway straight ahead, which will be your only option. When you see the next screen, it will have four different ways to go; once again, do the same and follow these directions:
- Right.
- Right.
- Right.
This is the northernmost room of the dungeon, where you will find the floodgates. You can open it by interacting with the mechanism on the right-hand side, and doing so will clear your way to the penultimate area of the tomb on the westernmost side.
Tomb Of The Unknown King - Finding The Cog Room
Leave the floodgate chamber and go straight until you come to another crossroads. To get to the next objective, you'll want to go:
- Right.
- Right.
- Right.
This will take you to a new room with cogs on the wall. You'll want to go to the left-hand side of the room and interact with them to get them moving faster. With this done, you've opened the way to the centre of the labyrinth where the Brothers' boss fight is waiting.
Tomb Of The Unknown King - Brothers GF Boss Fight
Now you're going to be going to the final fight of the dungeon where you'll battle Sacred and his brother Minotaur. This is another relatively simple fight. Leave the cog room and go down the straight hallway to get back on track. To reach the centre, you must follow these directions.
- Right.
- Forward.
- Left.
You’ll come to a new screen with a door in front of you and a bridge. Go into the room and you’ll find Sacred hanging out again on top of the tomb. This time, Sacred has some backup from his ‘bro’ Minotaur. Fight and beat them to add the Brothers GF to your roster.
You’ll also get the Triple Triad card for Sacred when you beat them. With that done, there will be a small cutscene where the tomb opens, and a skeleton does a merry jig for you. After the skeleton has disappeared, you'll be rewarded with the Minotaur Card.
Now that you've claimed the Brothers GF, your work here is done and you can leave the labyrinth. To do this, run out of the boss chamber and back across the bridge; head straight forward again and you'll see the Student ID sword from earlier, and then head straight forward two more times to get yourself free from the labyrinth’s dastardly and confounding clutches.
Report Back To Deling City
Now to complete the quest. Leave the area and head back to Deling City. In the city, make your way back to the Caraway Mansion and relay the Student ID you found earlier to his gate guard. The game makes you enter the ID in reverse order for whatever reason, so make sure you punch it in correctly. Since our Student ID was 102, we will enter it as two, zero, and one.
With the code successfully relayed, the guard will let you in. Now you can finally progress through with the main story of the game and carry out the planned assassination of Sorceress Edea.
