Some Fortnite quests flip the script, rewarding you for being first to complete a specific task — but don't let that trick you into chasing victory. The goal here isn’t to win the whole match, but rather to outpace the competition in smaller moments, like being the first to land, fish, or even die (yes, that counts too).

Whether you prefer quick eliminations or peaceful foraging, there are plenty of ways to snag these achievements. In this guide, we’ll explore how to approach these moments, helping you tick off these objectives with ease. If you’re ready to outplay the clock (and maybe your opponents), let’s jump right in.

How To Finish Anything But First In Different Matches

Some quests challenge you to finish anything but first across several matches. Simply put, this means be the first player out of all 100 to perform a certain action. Here are some ways to tick off these objectives. Whether it's landing fast, grabbing loot, or being the first to die, here's how you can strategically aim for specific firsts in a match.

A pop-up will appear top-center, letting you know if you snagged that “first” before anyone else. You'll also get 250 XP for doing so.

How to get

Tips

First to die

Drop from the Battle Bus immediately and aim for a populated area or hot zone.

Don’t grab any weapons or shields — just run straight into danger.

First to get a kill

Land right away, grab the nearest weapon, and hunt down a player who is still gathering loot.

Drop at a POI that often has lots of players that land early. A shotgun is ideal for quick eliminations, if you can get one quickly.

First to get full shields

As soon as you land, focus on looting shield potions and other shield items. Then, use them.

Look for spots with guaranteed shield drops, like gas stations or Rebel’s Roost. Stack minis first, then chug a big shield potion to fill up.

First to land

Jump from the Battle Bus immediately when it appears, and dive straight down towards a high-elevation point (like a mountaintop).

Go straight down and then press forward to dive faster. Try aiming for small POIs with fewer distractions, so you can hit the ground first.

First to open a chest

Drop quickly and land near an outdoor chest.

Avoid buildings — outdoor chests are easier to spot and access without wasting time opening doors.

First to forage

Head to Rebel’s Roost, which has plenty of Shield Shrooms growing around it.

Land fast, grab a mushroom, and eat it immediately to secure this first. Ignore looting to stay focused.

First to fish

Land near the lake southwest of Grand Glacier and head straight to a fishing hole. Use the rod provided in barrels near the shoreline.

Stick close to the edge of the lake to avoid enemies while you fish. A quiet start ensures no interference from other players.
