Maintaining a Disease-free colony in a frozen world is no easy task, but there are steps you can take to minimize the risk. In this guide, we'll cover the key buildings to construct and laws to pass to help keep Disease at bay and ensure your citizens remain healthy.

How To Reduce Disease

Cold, Hunger, and Squalor are three factors causing Disease in your colony. If you fail to meet demand for all three factors, the Disease spread will accelerate. Providing Heat will keep Cold in check, providing enough Food will tackle Hunger, and maintaining decent working conditions will reduce Squalor.

If you manage to control all three of these indicators at all times, the chances of citizens getting Sick will be greatly reduced, allowing them to stay productive. In any case, you should always check the Syringe icon near the bowl icon in the upper resource bar, a tooltip will tell you the status of the Disease, whether it is Stable, Growing, or Catastrophic.

Buildings

The best way to combat Disease is to prevent it from spiralling out of control as early as possible. By researching specific ideas in the Idea Tree, you can unlock specialized buildings that will help treat Sick citizens quickly, stopping the spread before it reaches others.

Hospitals are the primary source of curing the sick and reducing the Disease significantly in your colony. Establishing at least one Hospital at the start of the game will be the best strategy to stop citizens from getting sick. However, you will need to build more Hospitals as your colony grows over time.

Hospitals, once built over a Housing District, give you a 'Preliminary Triage' District ability. When you have a very high number of sick citizens in your colony, you can use this option to cure a lot of people at a faster rate. However, the 'Preliminary Triage' District ability is a double-edged sword, and using this has a high chance of many deaths.

The Pharmaceutical Testing Laboratory building helps reduce Disease by manufacturing medicine. When you build this facility, you unlock the 'Boost Research' District ability. Using this ability increases the research speed, which is excellent if you are rushing a particular idea. However, the effect on Disease is reduced for some time.

Radical Idea

In addition to the Hospitals, Pharmaceutical Laboratory, and Emergency Medical Hub the Panaceum Factory is another alternative to reduce Disease significantly. However, this is a Radical idea and is locked by default. To unlock it, you will need to progress with the 'Reason' ideology.

Once you have unlocked this idea and researched it, you will need to build the facility in the Industrial District. The factory will produce health-boosting nutrients derived from corpses, which will be used to enhance the diet of the living.

Frostland is full of opportunities where you mostly find resources to loot and bring back to your colony. However, if you have built a couple of Logistics Districts and sent multiple Frostland Teams to explore the Frostland, there is a high chance you will find a Medicinal settlement that helps you cure the sick faster.

If you happen to stumble upon such points of interest in the frostland, connect the settlement using Trails with the main colony and it will help reduce Disease.
