A new data analysis has suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6's pre-orders on PS5 are outselling the Xbox release eight to one, which isn't a surprise after Rockstar said the game "plays best" on PlayStation.

For some time now, it's been clear that Rockstar and PlayStation have some kind of deal going on for GTA 6. Trailer 2 was notably recorded entirely on a PS5, PlayStation was outright urging players to upgrade to a new console in time for GTA 6, and it's been reported that Sony basically sees the game as a first-party title, even if it isn't one.

That was all made much, much clearer earlier this week when pre-orders for GTA 6 finally opened, as PlayStation put a ton of effort into promoting the launch, from changing its app icon to adding a whole new splash screen. It also teamed up with Rockstar to say GTA 6 "plays best" on PS5 and PS5 Pro, so it's no surprise to learn which platform is currently performing the best.

IGN Data Claims GTA 6 On PS5 Is Outselling Xbox 8 To 1

That Was Always Going To Be The Case, Let's Be Real

Although Rockstar and Take-Two have yet to say anything about how GTA 6's pre-orders are going (although selling out on Amazon in an hour is a good sign), IGN has given us a peek at the difference in sales between the PS5 and Xbox versions. Through the IGN Finds' and commerce affiliate linking program, data shows that the PS5 release is outperforming Xbox eight-to-one.

It seems this figure has actually jumped up over the past few days, as IGN Finds previously reported that it was six-to-one.

While it's worth noting that this figure is based on IGN's data and isn't representative of every storefront and retailer out there, it doesn't really come as a surprise. Beyond the whole "plays best" situation and Rockstar's clear preference for PlayStation for GTA 6, the Xbox Series simply has a smaller audience than the PS5 and is bound to sell less overall.

Even with a game as massive as GTA 6 that's going to appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers, there's no changing that fact. While it may not be surprising with all that in mind, it is still a bit of a shock to the system to see considering it was only two mainline games ago that Xbox was clearly the preferred platform for Rockstar.
