In case you missed it — and we're almost certain you didn't — Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed … into 2026. Specifically, May 26, 2026, a whole year-plus from today.
In the aftermath of Rockstar Games' and Take Two's surprising announcement, it's been reported that employees did not believe that the original Fall 2025 window was achievable. Elsewhere, analysts have spoken about the impact the game's delay will have on the industry, including on other studios who would've potentially been competing with the game.

As first reported by GamesRadar, multiple industry analysts have provided an assessment of GTA 6's overall delay, adding insight that speaks to the impact the game would have created had it released as planned.
Dr. Serkan Toto, the CEO of Japanese consultancy firm Kantan Games, spoke about the impact the delay will have on other studios, saying that those studios "are probably breathing a sigh of relief now: No more danger that GTA 6 takes the oxygen out of the room anymore."
With GTA effectively creating a void in the year, Toto believes Nintendo and the Switch 2 can make 2025 their own. "Now Nintendo has half a year to prepare and market a potentially big holiday line-up," he said in part.
Elsewhere, Joost van Dreunen, a professor at the NYU Stern School of Business, echoed many of those points, adding, "without GTA 6 sucking the air out of the room, Q4 just got a little more breathable for everyone else."
Van Dreunen also spoke about Rockstar's own mindset regarding the delay, noting it's all a calculated effort. "The delay isn't a stumble — it's Rockstar doing what it always does: waiting for the perfect moment. GTA 6 now lands in May 2026, giving it a bigger install base, less competition, and total narrative control."
"That's how GTA 5 managed to achieve its success, too."
Ultimately, it will be on the publishers and developers left behind to generate their own buzz without a GTA to do it for them, according to the analysts. But it does afford them a new lane that otherwise wouldn't have existed. Which is to say that the impact GTA 6 has had and will have on the industry is almost unbelievable.
