Helldivers 2 has been on a rollercoaster over the past few months. After seeing a dramatic fall in the player count because of all the nerfs, it's back in the good graces of the community post a six-week update schedule. Fans were expecting something extra special on Liberty Day, and it seems Arrowhead has delivered.

Melee weapons are something that the community has requested for a long time. The ability to slash or smash a bug when they're up close seems like it would be pretty useful. A melee weapon has finally arrived, but not in the way that you might think. The devs have introduced what is essentially a World War 1 rifle with a bayonet.

Over The Trenches

The 2124 Constitution rifle is a bolt action rifle that's modelled on a classic Springfield rifle. It requires an arduous reload process after each shot, hardly conducive to fighting a horde of rampaging Terminids or Automatons. While the rate of fire isn't exactly great, the rifle includes a bayonet that can be used to stab enemies in the heat of battle.

The bayonet can one-shot smaller bugs and bots, but you're going to require a whole lot more for the bigger ones. You'd think that a weapon like this would annoy the player base, which only recently started appreciating Arrowhead again, but it seems they love it.

The 2124 Constitution isn't exactly meant to be a proper primary weapon. It's sort of a joke added by the devs to pay homage to the first game, as well as act as a challenge for some players. The whole idea of adding this weapon to Helldivers 2 was for the players who like to up the ante on the difficulty. Imagine completing a mission with nothing but a bayonet. That's one way of joining the likes of John Helldiver as an absolute legend of Super Earth. Adding the weapon to Helldivers 2 serves as a reminder of where Super Earth came from, before becoming a galaxy spanning empire.

Along with the 2124 Constitution, the update also introduced the DP-00 Tactical Armor, which is a callback to the original armour in the previous game. What better occasion than Liberty Day to remember the sacrifices of the brave Helldivers of the past?
