Summary

  • Helldivers 2 players are struggling to coordinate their efforts on the battlefield, as shown by the recent annoyance surrounding the battles for Acamar IV and Turing.
  • To try and combat this issue, players are calling for a regional chat like Warframe's, so that the community can talk to each other outside of missions.
  • A lot of players are on board with the idea, though there are concerns about potential "verbal toxicity". Hey, that's what moderators are for, right?

Helldivers 2 is pretty much one big group effort to try and defend the forces of evil from taking over Super Earth. If you've ever been part of a group project that consists of more than four people, you'll know how difficult it can be to coordinate your movement, so imagine what it's like trying to coordinate the actions of around 35,000 people at once.

Helldivers 2 Works Because It Wasn't Conceived As A Live-Service Game

Arrowhead’s squad shooter is a live service because that’s what allowed it to tell the best stories

It can be pretty frustrating to see fellow Helldivers going after targets that are outright harming their chances of completing objectives, which is exactly what recently happened this week. Helldivers 2 players were steadily working to liberate a planet called Acamar IV, and were approaching the final stages until hitting an unexpected snag.

That snag was the invasion of Turing, a planet next to Acamar IV that needed to be successfully defended within 22 hours. Understandably pushed on by the tight deadline, players rushed to Turing from Acamar IV, without realizing that the invasion was coming from the very same planet they were fighting to liberate. It caused a split between the game's playerbase, and slowed the fight down for everyone.

Helldivers 2 Players Want A Region Chat Like Warframe

Helldivers 2 players have been calling for more precise tutorials for quite a while, though some think a better solution to this problem would be for developer Arrowhead to introduce a regional chat, and allow teams of Helldivers to talk to each other while not in a mission. That way, the entire playerbase could be notified of where to go at a moment's notice.

This idea was first floated by the community by Reddit user theCowboyMartyr, who shared their frustration with the situation earlier this week. In their post, they think that Helldivers 2 needs "a region chat like Warframe", claiming that "over 7-8k players don’t use Discord or Reddit or their brains". A bit harsh.

It seems to be a harsh truth though, as their post has racked up over 3k upvotes, and it's still going. Most of the replies in the post are filled with people also frustrated by the situation, and call on Arrowhead to either let players communicate to avoid things like this in the future, or make the Galaxy Map more transparent, so it's easier to see exactly where their efforts would be most effective.

Of course, having a massive regional chat filled with different people would undoubtedly invite some trouble, as you can bet your sweet bippy that there will be some crude remarks about Eagle-1, or some horrible comments towards other players, right from the get-go. A number of players worry about potential "verbal toxicity", though if Arrowhead hired some decent moderators, I don't think many Helldivers would be irritated with a new social tool to fight their enemies with.
