RELATED: Games To Play If You Like Hokko Life
This guide explains everything you need to know about fishing in Hokko Life. You will have to unlock the ability to fish, then furthermore complete challenges and unlock other things pertaining to fishing. There's a lot to unlock and grind toward in the game, so we'll help you out to access the ability to fish first.
How To Get The Ability To Fish
During your first days in town, once you have a home for yourself, you'll find a bear named Derris roaming around. Speak to him to unlock the crafting recipe for a fishing rod. To craft a fishing rod, you need to take three Wooden Logs and two Grass Tufts to Sally's Workshop. Grass Tufts can be collected by interacting with green bushes around town. Wooden Logs can be collected by chopping at trees with an axe.
There are multiple areas to start fishing in the game. The most accessible location is the river within the meadows, near all the houses. The next location is the beach to the right of the town. You may also unlock access to the Grove, which is a little pond in the forest area North of town.
To access the Grove you need to build stairs to reach the higher portion of the meadow and then head all the way to the back of the map, where a hiking trail starts. The path directly to your left has a broken path and a waterfall. As soon as you walk toward the end of the cliff, you gain access to a recipe for a bridge. Craft a bridge to reach the other side and then the Grove.
How To Use Fishing Rod
Now let's get down to the hardest part for most people. To throw your line into the water, simply press the interact button. You want to aim the bob in front of the fish. Once the fish latches on, you have to press the interact button again within a quick time frame. Then, it's game on.
The game will prompt you with buttons which will be your primary movement keys. The key is to pay attention to the yellow bar at the bottom of the blue bar. This is yourrod tension. If it becomes too high, you will break the line and lose the fish. If you just hold down the button command, your tension will keep rising. To succeed in fishing, it's best to tap a lot or only hold the button down for a short amount of time. You want to allow the tension to go down before giving it your all again, but you also don't want the fish to go down with it.
Types of Fish
Catching fish is peaceful and entertaining, sure, but which ones are the most profitable? These are the questions you should be asking if you want to make the most of your time by the waterfront. Some fish can only be caught with bait, some depend on the weather or season present. Bait can be unlocked by completing Mayor Merits for fishing. You can complete fishing challenges with Derris to go up in Merits.

Fishing Tournaments and Challenges
Once you start fishing regularly, start speaking to Derris more. He will offer you rewards for catching new fish or bigger fish than last time. Derris can also provide you with fishing challenges if you desire. These challenges involve catching a certain amount of fish within a short time frame and other fun activities that get you engaged. Aside from small daily challenges, every month Derris sends out a flyer to your mailbox introducing the season's fishing tournament. Fishing tournaments are just bigger fishing challenges that require you to run around to different locations, not just the beach. You can win achievements and trophies for this.
