Legendary Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura has reacted to the surprising news of Missing Link's cancellation, calling it "unfortunate" and hoping that fans hear the music she put together for it.

Over the past few years, Kingdom Hearts fans have been through the wringer. After the incredibly exciting announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link at the series' 20th anniversary event in 2021, news regarding the series has slowed to an absolute crawl, and we heard pretty much nothing about either game in the three years since they were revealed.

With the Switch 2 being a more powerful console, Kingdom Hearts shouldn't have to be cloud-based anymore.

That's not too surprising when it comes to Kingdom Hearts 4, but it was weird for Missing Link since it seemed so close to release when it was announced. Couple that with the fact that it had multiple closed betas (which I even played), and its sudden delay into 2025 made it seem like the project was in big trouble. Surprise, surprise, it was.

Earlier today, Square Enix announced that Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link had been cancelled, leaving many fans of the series wondering what the heck happened after all those years spent on development. We currently don't know what went on with the mobile game to lead to it being cancelled, but it seems that the cancellation of Missing Link is a surprise to even those who worked on it.

Over on Twitter, legendary Kingdom Hearts composer Yoko Shimomura retweeted the announcement that Missing Link is no more and shared her thoughts on the whole matter. According to the translation, Shimomura said that the cancellation is "unfortunate news", and noted that she'd even played it herself and was looking forward to it launching.

To make things even more of a gut-punch for Kingdom Hearts fans, Shimomura said that she hopes fans get to hear the songs that were written for the game, suggesting that more work on Missing Link had been done than you might expect. Well, after three years, maybe it's exactly what you'd expect, but it still implies that a lot of music had been made.

The closed betas did at least let us hear Shimomura's incredible new rendition of Dearly Beloved, which is one of the best iterations in the series.

Shimomura's comments make it clear that the composer is just as surprised as the rest of us about Missing Link's cancellation. While it's possible that she knew before the announcement, it does seem like the decision was made just as suddenly by Square Enix as it was announced.
