By helping your friends awaken to their battle characteristics in Persona 3 Reload, you'll equip your teammates in SEES with all sorts of critically helpful new perks related to their primary roles on your team. Doing so requires a time slot, but awakening a teammate's characteristics can be game-changing.

What Are Personality Characteristics?

In Persona 3 Reload, characteristics are traits your teammates can be given to use in battle, almost always passive perks that make your life a little easier as the leader on the battlefield. Each of their battle traits tend to make it easier to boost their Theurgy gauge, meaning they'll be able to use their special moves more often in battle.

In the base game, you'll need to hang out with someone three times to fully awaken their combat characteristic. When you return to the dorm at night, you'll often see one of your teammates with a blue smiley face icon over their heads (as well as on the mini-map). This icon means you can make progress toward awakening their characteristics.

If you don't often include someone in the team, you never have to improve their P3R combat characteristics - if you have another use for the evening time slot, use it!

Once you decide you're hanging out with that character, you'll see an interactive cutscene with them, which are known as Linked Episodes. Not everyone is available all the time, but if you see them with that smiley, chat with them to trigger a Linked Episode.

During them, you can do things like:

  • Watch movies in the dorm lounge. This teammate will be waiting in the lounge on 1F, where you begin your evening time slot.
  • Make coffee or cook together in the kitchen, though they'll be standing or sitting near the bar to start the scene.
  • Read in the sitting area on 2F, where they'll typically be waiting for you.
    • You can see them here on your minimap without going upstairs yourself to check if someone is around.
  • Garden up on the roof, which buffs not only your friendship, but helps your crops as well. They'll wait at the bottom of the stairs on 1F, and you'll go up to the roof together.

You'll typically see a character awakening to a basic version of an ability early on into spending time with them, and then on the third time you opt to spend your nighttime time slot with them, their battle characteristics will evolve into a better version of that ability.

No matter who has awakened to a new combat characteristic in Persona 3 Reload, they'll be able to use it the very next time you venture into battle. You may even earn points for their social link if the teammate in question happens to have one, too!

In the Episode Aigis DLC, you'll still be spending time with teammates as Aigis to ensure they awaken to the same characteristics, but you need special items to trigger the scenes. These items are obtained from Twilight Fragment chests as boss battle rewards in the Abyss of Time.

Your Protagonist Also Has Characteristics

Like his teammates, the protagonist receives combat characteristics throughout the game as well. Unlike them, though, there aren't special activities for him to do - those are mostly saved for building your social stats.

Instead, your protagonist unlocks combat characteristics in Persona 3 Reload by filling the Compendium by fusing new Personas to use in battle. Elizabeth remarks on your Compendium completion once you've logged one third and later two thirds of all Personas. She'll also drop the price to summon Personas from the Compendium along the way.
