For some, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's battle meta is getting a little stale. As confirmed by some pretty in-depth research, the format is dominated by Mewtwo ex, Pikachu ex, and a variety of Misty decks, which often include Articuno ex and Starmie ex. Any attempt to deviate from this, bar a couple of exceptions, and you're probably going to lose.

This has led the game's vast community to come together to create a range of different rule sets that players can take part in. These often exclude the meta cards and help to keep the game fresh.

Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's Alternative Battle Formats

As Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's meta became near-finalized, the NOEX format was born. Here, players could participate in private battles with decks comprising any card that didn't have 'ex' in its name, leaving the big hitters out to dry.

A level of trust was required, as there's nothing stopping players from bringing ex cards to battle, but apart from the odd troll, the format was an overwhelming success and a breath of fresh air.

This new competition took off in such a way that a variety of other formats have begun to crop up in the Pokemon TCG Pocket subreddit.

As shared by user Honest_Sky_5375, players can now take part in the following formats:

  • ONES - Decks cannot contain duplicate cards and must contain 20 uniquely named cards.
  • ONESNOX - As above, except excluding ex cards
  • TRINERGY - Deck must generate three different energy types and contain one Pokemon of each energy
  • BINERGY - As above, except with two energy types instead of three
  • 1NERGY - As above, except with one energy type instead of two or three
  • BASIC - Decks can only run basic Pokemon, excluding ex cards.
  • 2TAGE - Decks can only run basic Pokemon with no two-stage evolution

After building your format-legal decks, these can be joined by selecting the Private Match option from the battle tab in the game and typing in the bolded code above.

With such a taste for different battle types, it will be interesting to see if the Pokemon TCG Pocket team adds the ability to include custom rule sets to battles.
