Summary
- Many Pokemon have unique type combinations, like Dark/Fairy Grimmsnarl
- Some rare types include Normal/Ghost Hisuian Zorua and Steel/Fairy Mawile
- Pokemon like Heatran (Fire/Steel) and Lucario (Fighting/Steel) are powerful and versatile fighters.
At this point, the Pokemon franchise is a veritable menagerie of pocket monsters ranging from fearsome dragons to cuddly electric mice. These Pokemon are grouped into various types, such as Normal, Fire, Water, and Grass. Many Pokemon have two types – like Charizard who is a Fire and Flying-type.
For the most part, the typing combinations are a little predictable; some good examples of these are Bug and Poison and Fire and Dragon. There are a handful of Pokemon with some unique typing combinations that are worth noting, though. These aren’t the only Pokemon with unique or rare typing combinations — just some that are particularly noteworthy.
Updated on September 28, 2024, by Kyle Chamaillard: It's hard to believe there are still type combinations we've yet to see in the main Pokemon series, but there are still plenty. We've decided to update this list with a few more Pokemon that have unique type combinations.
23 Grimmsnarl
Dark/Fairy
Grimmsnarl and its pre-evolutions (Impidimp and Morgrem) are the only Dark and Fairy-type Pokemon in the National Pokedex. Though these types couldn't be more different, they work well together to create one of the strongest creatures from the eighth generation of games.
While Grimmsnarl already has impressive Attack and Special Attack stats, its biggest strength is its diverse moveset and immunity to various attacks. The Dark and Fairy-type Pokemon won't be affected by Dragon or Psychic-type moves while also having a strong resistance to Ghost and Dark-type attacks.
22 Abomasnow
Grass/Ice
Abomasnow and its pre-evolution, Snover, are the only Grass and Ice-type Pokemon, and they've both become fan favorites due to their strength and durability. As long as you keep them away from Fire-type Pokemon, you can crush most competition with stunning moves like Wood Hammer or Sheer Cold.
Due to the unique type match-up, Snover and Abomasnow are extra effective against Ground, Water, Grass, and Electric-type Pokemon. They also have a wide range of other weaknesses, but their HP and Defense stats are so high that you can hopefully endure an attack or two before you have to swap them out for something else.
21 Altaria (Mega Evolution)
Dragon/Fairy
The best type combinations are the ones that balance each other out by providing the strengths of both sides while neutralizing weaknesses and vulnerabilities. While Altaria is usually a Dragon and Flying-type, its Mega Evolution transforms it into the rare Dragon and Fairy-type Pokemon that is capable of dealing heavy blows while taking minimal damage.
The combination of Dragon and Fairy allows Mega Altaria to be resistant to Fighting, Bug, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark-type attacks. While Mega Altaria can smother these kinds of Pokemon, it's very weak to Poison, Steel, Ice, and even Fairy-type moves.
20 Galarian Weezing
Poison/Fairy
The original Weezing was simply a Poison-type Pokemon; however, the Galarian Weezing is a Poison and Fairy-type Pokemon, which is the only Poison and Fairy-type in the series. That doesn't mean it's a great addition to your main party, though, because it's really not.

There are quite a few Pokemon games on Nintendo Switch Online, but which one is the best?
Posts By Kyle ChamaillardThe Galarian Weezing has decent Attack and Defense ratings, but its other stats are below average. Its move-set is also a little more than underwhelming; you're going to need to use some TMs (or TRs) to get your Galarian Weezing into fighting form. On top of this, its abilities are not the best — except Neutralizing Gas, which helps level the playing field for Galarian Weezing.
19 Hisuian Zorua
Normal/Ghost
Zorua is a Dark-type Pokemon that's been in the series since generation five (Black and White). In generation eight, Zorua was given a Hisuian form. This new form is a Normal and Ghost-type Pokemon, and is the only Pokemon with this combination of types. Zorua evolves into Zoroark, which is also a Normal and Ghost-type.
The problem with this Pokemon is that it doesn't learn any Fairy-type moves when leveling-up. It has some alright Dark moves in its move-pool, but not anywhere near the best Dark moves. Despite this, Hisuian Zoroark's stats are good enough to warrant using a TM or two to improve its moveset.
18 Great Tusk
Ground/Fighting
Great Tusk was introduced in Scarlet and Violet, and is actually a Pokemon worth adding to your main party. This Ground and Fighting-type has superb overall stats, and a move-pool filled with strong attacks. Attack is one of Great Tusk's best stats, and nearly all of its attacking moves use Attack, rather than Special Attack.
The Ground and Fighting-type doesn't seem like one that would still be unique after nine generations of games. In fact, this type combination seems like a perfect union. However, if you decide to use Great Tusk, you should keep in mind that six move types are super effective against this type combination.
17 Grafaiai
Normal/Poison
Some Pokemon look fearsome, while others are cute and seem almost harmless. Grafaiai, a Normal and Poison-type that evolves from Shroodle, is a little bit of both. Like Great Tusk, this Pokemon was added in Scarlet and Violet.
A great reason to use this Pokemon as your main Poison-type is its ability to Poison opposing Pokemon that use a physical attack against it. It also has above average Attack and Speed ratings to go along with a move pool that contains some of the best Poison-type moves.
16 Lokix
Bug/Dark
When the Bug-type Pokemon called Nymble evolves, it becomes Lokix, which is a Bug and Dark-type. This is another unique type combination that seems like it should be more common. This robotic-looking bug is as fearsome as it appears.

These flighty insects are the best of all Pokemon's butterflies and moths.
Posts By Andrew ScariatiLokix may not have the best stats, overall, but its Speed and Attack are high enough to let it contend against high tier Pokemon. Its Swarm ability increases its damage by 50 percent if it's below one-third its maximum health. It has the Tinted Lens as a hidden ability, which increases the damage of its moves that are not very effective. This Pokemon also has numerous types of moves in its move pool, allowing for greater customization in move-sets.
15 Shedinja
Bug/Ghost
Shedinja is a Bug and Ghost-type Pokemon that was introduced in generation three (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald). Shedinja is the only pairing of the Bug and Ghost types. This unique Pokemon is acquired after evolving Nincada into a Ninjask while carrying an empty Poke Ball in your inventory. Shedinja is also unique in that it only ever has one HP.
This detriment is somewhat overcome by its Wonder Guard ability, which prevents Shedinja from taking damage from a move that isn’t super effective against it. It is weak against Fire, Flying, Rock, Ghost, and Dark-type moves.
14 Drampa
Normal/Dragon
In the early days of Pokemon, there were only three Dragon-types: Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite. Some of them looked like dragons, like Charizard, but were not dragons. Nowadays, there are more dragons in Pokemon games than in the Elder Scrolls games. There are all manner of dragons too, but only one Normal and Dragon-type: Drampa.
Drampa looks like an off-color Falkor — and if you got that reference you just earned a few cool points. Even the description of Drampa says it is gentle and enjoys playing with children. Sadly, as far as Dragon-types go, Drampa is on the weaker end, but it's by no means terrible in battle.
