How To Get A Horse Cart

In Dead Rails, buildings have loot tables, which means certain buildings have loot exclusive to them. The horse cart is exclusive to barns, so you'll need to find a barn first; they tend to spawn far away from any towns and the train tracks. You'll be able to spot them in the distance from the train, though a horse cart isn't guaranteed to spawn in every barn you see.

Horse carts tend to spawn with a horse in these barns, though if the horse dies, the cart can be reattached to another horse with a saddle on it.

If you do need to get another saddled horse, look for outlaws. Saddles by themselves are a lot rarer than outlaws riding saddled horses, and once the outlaws themselves are taken out, you can use their horses as your own.

How To Use Horse Carts

Horse carts operate nearly identically to the train wagon; you can weld any item you find to them, including other horse carts, meaning you can expand the storage of the horse cart by welding another to it.

This feature is incredibly useful if you're raiding a place that's far from the train, or if your train runs out of fuel, as you're no longer limited to looting only the items that can fit in your sack - you can now carry as much as can physically fit on top of the horse cart.

Horse Cart Uses

The horse cart is almost essential for certain challenges, namely the Pony Express challenge. The challenge requires you to complete the game without using the train at any point, so your main method of traveling will be either on foot or, more preferably, on horseback. With the horse cart, you can have a sort of mini-train, which makes this challenge far easier.

Another use for horse carts comes from the fact that turrets can be purchased and welded to them, much like the ones on the walls of checkpoints. Since horses are faster than any other mob in the game, mounting a turret to the back of the horse cart allows for two players to have an impenetrable defense from most attacks, as the player in control of the horse can evade oncoming threats, whilst the player on the turret mows them down as they pass. It's an excellent strategy for two players to enjoy, though it becomes less easy to pull off for one person with the same equipment.
