Valve Officially Reveals How Much Its New Steam Machine Is Going To Cost As Pre-Orders Begin
Valve has finally bitten the bullet and opened pre-orders for the Steam Machine. That means it has finally revealed its hand and told us how much the console-PC hybrid is going to cost, and as we all feared, it's pretty darn expensive.
Prices start at £879 / $1,049 / €1,039 for the 512GB model, and rise with each package you go for. There are four to choose from, depending on how much memory you want, and if you want to chuck a Steam Controller in there. The most expensive bundle, a 2TB Steam Machine with a Steam Controller, will cost £1,208 / $1,428 / €1,428. If you can justify the money, then you're in luck, as the June 30 release date is not far off.
How Much Does The Steam Machine Cost?
ValvePre-orders, which are available right now if you can make it through Valve's virtual queue on the Steam website, include two models of the Steam Machine, each with various amounts of storage. The bad news is that even the smallest 512GB model costs $1,049. Yes, that's the least you're going to have to pay if you want to be the proud owner of a brand new Steam Machine when they're released.
The even worse news is that if you want more storage for your Steam library, the price is naturally going to go up significantly. The 2TB model of the Steam Machine costs $1,349.
As predicted, Valve does appear to have mitigated the cost of its Machine - if you can believe it - by selling the console without the Steam Controller. If you opt for a bundle that just includes the console and nothing else, then you can save yourself $79. The Steam Machine will be compatible with other controllers, so it's not like it's going to be useless if you choose to get one without its designated controller.
This might be the only way you can get a Steam Controller for a while, though, as it's believed the wait for the new device has crept into early 2027.
How To Pre-Order The Steam Machine
Valve has learned its lesson from previous releases. This time, anyone who wants to get a Steam Machine will have to put themselves forward for the chance to be randomly selected for pre-order. That means submitting your interest right now doesn't guarantee you a Steam Machine.
Making your interest known is simple. Just make sure you're signed in, and then simply select the Steam Machine bundle you're after, and hit "join the list". You have until June 25 to add yourself to the list. Anyone who signs up past the date will be added to a waitlist.
"We underestimated customer interest when we recently released the new Steam Controller, and we wanted to create a system that would be less frustrating and more fair for everyone," the website reads. "A launch that starts at a specific day and time tends to reward bots, people with fast internet connections, talented gaming fingers for quick F5/refresh reactions, and those who can schedule their life around that moment. By accepting reservation signups over the course of a few days, without any incentive to be first, we're hoping to take away some of that friction."
There are other methods to get around scalpers. The website states that you must have a Steam account that is "in good standing", and have made a purchase before April 17, 2026. Additionally, there is a one-per-household limit on the Steam Machine.
