It’s an exciting time to be a Super Mario Bros. fan, and April can’t come soon enough.

As with all movie trailers, there are moments you may have missed if you blinked at the wrong time. From brief shots of locations to characters in the background that aren’t entirely clear yet, the trailer was full of intriguing hints at what the Mario movie holds.

10 Homage To Original Arcade Game

In the trailer’s opening, Mario emerges into an arena to face off against Donkey Kong. While the brawl doesn’t go well for Mario, this brief glimpse at their encounter does show off the world of the Kongs.

There is one aspect of the arena you may not have caught: it’s modeled after the original Donkey Kong arcade game. Before Mario charges to try and punch DK, the trailer shows a wider scope of the arena, revealing a series of platforms, barrels, and ladders that look just like the game where Mario and DK debuted.

9 Cranky Kong Is King Of The Kongs

As Mario’s fight against Donkey Kong takes a turn for the worse, the trailer gives us a shot of Peach, Toad, and Cranky Kong looking on. Cranky Kong’s presence is somewhat overshadowed by Peach and Toad’s reactions of dismay, so he’s easy to miss when you watch the trailer.

What’s most intriguing about this scene is that Cranky Kong, voiced by Fred Armisen, appears to be the ruler of the Kong Kingdom or World. He’s sitting on a throne beside Peach, and wearing a headpiece that resembles a crown.

8 World Map

As Princess Peach and her Toads discuss how to defeat Bowser, the trailer shows a quick look at an Overworld Map, styled just like it belongs in one of the Super Mario Bros. games. As with the video games, this map likely shows all the worlds Mario, Peach, and Toad will travel to over the course of the movie.

On this map, the Mushroom Kingdom, the Kong World, Yoshi’s Island, and a Desert World are present. There are also two worlds decimated by lava, one of which has a hint of ice on it, which may be the Penguin’s World now ruined by Bowser.

7 Yoshi’s Island

Speaking of an Overworld Map with Yoshi’s Island on it, the trailer also gives us a sneak peek of Yoshi’s Island. It happens so fast, it’s easy to miss. In this brief moment, a band of Yoshi are running across a lush island landscape. This world resembles the Yoshi’s Island series of games, but may also be an homage to Super Mario World.

The Yoshi in the trailer are all different colors. In addition to the classic green Yoshi, other colors include pink, yellow, sky blue, and red.

6 Classic Level With Metal Piranha Plants

The trailer shows what appears to be a scene of Mario training to take on Bowser in the form of a classic Super Mario Bros. level. These iconic obstacles and geometry include; blocks, pipes, fake firebars, donut blocks, and a flag pole.

However, what you may have missed are the metal Piranha Plants built into the level. While a glimpse of Bowser’s army shows real Piranha Plants as they appear in the games, Peach’s practice level includes fake enemies in the form of mechanical Piranha Plants.

5 Fire Flower Peach Outfit Change

In another quick moment in the trailer, we see a field full of Fire Flowers. Peach touches one, which puts a fireball in her hand. While this scene is easy to catch, you may have missed that Peach’s new Fire powers also powers her up with her a new outfit.

Peach with the Fire Flower power-up now wears a white and red dress, which is her alternate look in the Super Mario Bros. games when she’s Fire Peach. This attention to detail is exciting. It’s likely we’ll see Fire Mario and perhaps even Fire Toad in the film.

4 Tanooki Mario

Another classic power-up that appears in the trailer is Tanooki Mario. Unlike the Fire Flower, we’re not shown how Mario gains this power, but we do get to see the Tanooki suit in action. In a brief moment during the trailer, Mario flies across the screen between some tall mushrooms.

Tanooki Mario looks extremely true to the games’ design, providing another faithful nod to the source material. Mario also appears confident using this power-up, which suggests this could be a shot from late in the movie.

3 Other Kong Appearances

The Mario Kart reveal at the end of the trailer amps up the anticipation for the film. This fun nod to one of Mario’s most classic spin-off series is the perfect addition to the Mario movie. In this closing moment of the trailer, too, you can spot the presence of more Kongs in the background.

Though their presence in the background makes their exact identities unclear, the most prevalent of the cameo Kongs is Funky Kong. Sporting his classic sunglasses and bandana, as he drives his kart right behind Donkey Kong.

2 Motorcycle Peach

Speaking of Mario Kart, Princess Peach’s vehicle of choice is her motorcycle. The trailer includes her driving into action alongside Mario, as well as giving us a good shot of her motorcycle outfit. This look is yet again true to the games.

The choice to have Peach drive a motorcycle fits well with the spin the movie seems to be putting on her character. She is actively standing up to Bowser and has a bit of an edge to her, painting her character as more defiant and bold.

1 Mario Jumping Effect

In the Mario Kart scene, after landing on Rainbow Road, Mario jumps in his kart. When he does, the classic jumping sound effect plays. If you’re caught up in the action of the trailer and the joy of seeing the Mario Kart references, you may not have registered the noise.

This Easter egg is fun and raises questions about what other iconic Mario sound effects might appear in the film. The music for the final movie will also be exciting to hear, as the soundtrack from the trailers gives a hint of how the traditional Mario music will be adapted for the big screen.
