Summary

  • A new patch for Silent Hill 2 Remake is reportedly soft-locking players in the Labyrinth.
  • There is no way to progress through the cube puzzle as a door doesn't open.
  • You can down patch to fix this issue, but only on a physical copy of the game.

Bloober Team released a substantial Silent Hill 2 Remake patch, fixing many technical issues and bugs but unfortunately, the studio may also have introduced a new game-breaking bug with the update (thanks, Eurogamer).

According to player reports, the patch is soft-locking players in the game's Labyrinth section. There's a bug in the Labyrinth's second area where a door doesn't open when it should during the cube puzzle, halting progress. There are multiple reports of this bug from players on a Reddit thread about the patch.

Can't Escape The Labyrinth

"The latch broke the labyrinth on PS5 sadly. The cube puzzle is not updating after completing a zone," pberg28 writes. "Literally saved and quit last night after finishing the first path, to wake up to an update that might've broken it. I'm a PC player so just know Steam's version is broken too. Waiting to see if they release a super quick hotfix soon," adds charlcttebug.

There are two entries in the full patch notes that concern the Labyrinth: "Fixed an issue where, after completing the Disgust Path in Labyrinth, the player was forced to do it all over again," and "Fixed an issue with triggering Spider Mannequin on Fear Path in the Labyrinth multiple times." However, neither of these fixes concerns the cube puzzle so it's unknown if this change is what's affecting the area.

While a couple of players have commented that deleting and re-downloading the game without an internet connection (essentially down patching) fixes the issue, this only works for players with a physical copy of Silent Hill 2 Remake. In all likelihood, Bloober Team and Konami will identify and hotfix this issue soon.

Silent Hill 2 Remake has proved a critical and commercial success, despite an atmosphere of doubt that permeated the fandom before the game's release. Our own 3.5/5 review of Silent Hill 2 Remake said it has "stunning locations" and "maintains the original script nicely" but is "generally sillier and schlockier than the original."
