Sinners has opened to dazzling review scores, earning the elusive perfect 100 percent Fresh critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The vampire movie, starring Michael B. Jordan (twice) and Hailee Steinfeld, is directed by Ryan Coogler and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year - not just in the horror realm, but across the entire industry. It's also, as far as 2025 films go, entirely unique.

That's because it's the only film coming out this year to shoot on IMAX Film. The next movie to use the technique, considered by many to be the best way to shoot a modern blockbuster epic, is Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, due out in 2026. This follows after there were no films released on IMAX Film at all in 2024.

What's The Difference Between IMAX Film And IMAX Digital?

Prior to Sinners, the last film on IMAX Film was another Nolan effort in Oppenheimer in 2023. Like Sinners, it was the only movie released that year on the format. 2022 also had a single movie shot this way, Jordan Peele's Nope. In 2021 it was the Bond movie No Time To Die, while 2020 had the pair of Wonder Woman 1984 and yet another Nolan movie in Tenet.

Of course, there are still plenty of IMAX movies coming out, they just weren't shot on film, but on IMAX Digital. This is much easier to work with, takes up far less storage space, requires lower maintenence, and can be easier to edit. In fact, even those shot on IMAX Film are only partially shot this way - typically only documentaries without the need for SFX are shot entirely on IMAX Film for this very reason.

Coming out on IMAX Digital this year, you've got your pick of Thunderbolts, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, F1, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Avatar: Fire & Ash, though film purists will say they don't quite offer the best of both world mix of old fashion filmic glow with modern crispness - you'll just have to see them all and judge for yourself. It's fair to say that Sinners probably uses a lot fewer special effects than Superman or Avatar though, so there is that to consider too.
