Soccer Story is a charming indie RPG about - you guessed it - soccer. Or football. Definitely football. The story revolves around a dystopian organisation who have all but banned the beloved sport. A magical ball chooses the player to become the Savior Of Soccer, and this kickstarts your adventure as you use your trusty ball in a variety of situations.

Either way, like any RPG, Soccer Story has a lot going on and it can initially be a bit too much to keep track of. Currencies, multiple objectives, tons of NPCs. It can all get quite overwhelming. Not to worry, though. With our trusty beginner tips, you'll be all sorted to tackle the challenges ahead in Soccer Story.

Talk To Every NPC

This one sounds simple, but you'd be surprised at how easy it is to overlook it. Despite its appearances as a sports game, Soccer Story is primarily an open-world RPG. Talking to NPCs can be critical to your progress in the main story and the several side objectives.

If you're struggling to find a goal that's part of your next objective, a random NPC can probably give you some directions. If you're not sure what a symbol in the environment represents, a neigbour will be able to shed some light on the situation. If you don't understand how a certain mechanic works, there's surely an NPC to help with that too.

Side objectives are usually tied to optional NPCs too. Side quests can grant you valuable rewards that can be used to upgrade your stats, so you're going to want to pursue at least a few of them.

Glimmers In The Bushes

At the start of the game, you'll gain access to a slide tackle. This can be used to tackle opponents and kick the ball, but it can also be used during exploration. If you see a bush or any foliage shining slightly, try to tackle it. There'll most likely be a coin waiting in the bushes.

Coins are a valuable resource in the game and finding them in foliage is the easiest, quickest way to farm for them. Once you've collected ten coins, you can exchange them for a medal that will upgrade a character's stats.

Eyes Peeled, Boots On

Apart from the hosts of shiny bushes, the environments in Soccer Story are home to plenty of secrets. Any monument or special prop you see can be used for something.

A stray goalpost might be part of a side quest. A hanging hive in a bush might yield a reward when you kick a ball at it. Standing in the middle of a group of roses might make a target appear out of thin air.

The world of Soccer Story is full of these types of secrets, so keep your eyes peeled for them.

It's Okay To Move On

To reiterate, this is an RPG, meaning you'll gain access to new abilities throughout the entire adventure. These new abilities help out in the soccer matches, sure. But they also open up exploration opportunities in the world.

Many side quests or puzzles scattered around the map won't be solvable when you gain access to them. Lots of them take more than clever thinking to complete, they require particular moves that aren't unlocked until later in the game. So a good tip is to not waste time on a puzzle that you have no context for, simply move on and come back later.

Tips For Winning Soccer Matches

The main events in the game are, of course, the soccer matches. These matches act as a climax to particular areas, but they can be pretty challenging in all parts of the game. Thankfully, there are a few rules you can follow to have a way easier time of it.

  • The first tip is to use those unlockable medals. Through coin-collecting and side quest-completing, you'll gain various medals that can increase your stats. Use them all before the start of a match if you want the edge. Start with your main character, then upgrade your goalkeeper to increase your defensive capabilities.
  • Another good tip is to avoid slide tackling too much during matches. It might be tempting to slide tackle during a match since it leaves opponents temporarily stunned and can close short distances easily, but it will also leave you vulnerable, since it takes a second for you to regain control, allowing an enemy to steal the ball in the meantime. Instead, sprint towards your enemy - the minute you touch them, you'll gain possession.
  • Finally, the last tip is simply to shoot. Enemies get faster and faster as you progress in Soccer Story. This means if you waste too much time dribbling the ball to the other side of the pitch, you're more likely to lose possession. Once your stats are high enough, or sometimes even if they're not, you can score a goal from the other side of the pitch. Shoot as often as you can and you'll be surprised by how often you score.
