Every Announcement Made During Sonic's Official Birthday Livestream
It has been 35 years since the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genesis, a sentence that makes me feel incredibly old. To mark the occasion, Sega is holding a birthday livestream for the blue blur during which it will announce everything it has planned for Sonic in the immediate future. From upcoming games to quirky crossovers, below you'll find everything that was revealed during Sonic's Birthday Livestream.
New Sonic Song From Crush 40
The livestream opened with an incredible montage that showed footage from just about every Sonic game ever, but that wasn't the best part. The best part was the song scoring it - an all-new Sonic song from the iconic Crush 40. It's called Speed Is My Life, and if you missed the stream, you can check out the track along with the montage above.
Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition Comes To Nintendo Switch 2
The first big announcement of the stream was confirmation that the Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition is real and available on Switch 2 right now. The presenters played into the joke that everyone kind of knows about this already, as physical copies of the game found their way out into the wild early. The full game complete with its DLC, which includes the additional story campaign and makes Tails, Amy, and Knuckles playable.
Sonic Yourself At Sonic-Me
SegaSega has launched something called Sonic-Me to celebrate the hedgehog turning 35. It's a website where you can create your own 16-bit avatar with tons of Sonic-themed customization options, giving you the chance to find out what you'd look like if you were in the original Genesis games.
Hunt For The Chaos Emeralds
A cameo from Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka up next as the Sega icon urged fans to go out and find the Chaos Emeralds before Eggman. They're scattered across the US, apparently, and you can go to the Sonic Chaos Hunt website to join the hunt and help get them back.
Classic Sonic And Crazy Taxi's Axel Are Coming To CrossWorlds
We already know about a lot of the free content coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in the future. Today, we learned about three free characters being added to the roster. Axel from Crazy Taxi, presumably because of Crazy Taxi: World Tour's launch next year, Amigo from Samba de Amigo, and Classic Sonic, who I can't believe wasn't in the game already. Axel arrives in August, Amigo in September, and Classic Sonic will be added via a free update later today.
TMNT Come To CrossWorlds Next Month
Sticking with CrossWorlds, before Axel arrives in August, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will join the roster as paid DLC next month. Mascots representing the four turtles appeared on set to confirm the release date, and the streamers hosting the presentation then showed off a first look at the TMNT stage that will accompany them when they're added to the game.
Playable iam8bit Sonic And Sonic 2 Sega Genesis Cartridges
iam8bit has teamed up with Sega to create playable 35th anniversary cartridges for the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Both cartridges are compatible with the Genesis, with the full original games playable on each one. One in eight of the cartridges is "infused with chaos emerald energy" which makes it glow in the dark. They come in cases based on the original releases with instruction manuals and posters.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Championships Announced
SegaThe first-ever Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds World Championship has been announced. Qualifiers for the tournament begin in-game on June 30, and anyone can enter regardless of rank or skill level. The top 24 players, when the qualifiers come to an end on July 19, will move forward to the world championships and be flown out to New York City to compete starting from October 9.
Sonic Forces On The Nex Playground
SegaOne of the stranger reveals during the livestream was that Sonic Forces Speed Battle is coming to the Nex Playground. Effectively a port of the mobile game, presenters showed how the game will work on the motion sensor-based console. Its camera tracks players, and you have to move your body to move the on-screen character like you would by swiping when playing Forces on your phone.
Lots More Sonic Concert Tour Dates Announced
SegaThe Sonic Live In Concert tour starts later this year, and tickets were hard to come by when they initially went on sale. That'll be why Sega has announced a lot more tour dates across the US, UK, and Canada, most of which will take place in 2027. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale at 10 am local time tomorrow.
Sonic Classic And Sonic Modern Collections Announced
Two unreleased Sonic collections are coming to Nintendo Switch. The Sonic Classic Collection and the Sonic Modern Collection. The Classic Collection will include Mania, Origins, and Superstars, and the Modern Collection includes Forces, Colors Ultimate, and Frontiers.
Shadow Announced For Sonic Pico Park
Revealed during Summer Game Fest, a Sonic version of Pico Park will be released soon. A new trailer debuted during today's livestream, confirming Shadow will be among the game's playable characters. We were also shown more gameplay as some of the presenters played the crossover game together on stream.
