Summary

  • Sonic x Shadow Generations is out there now early access has begun and people are clocking the changes to the remastered half of the game.
  • One of the changes is Rouge's chest has been covered up, and as you might expect, some think that is unacceptable.
  • Other Sonic fans don't care at all and point out that the minor change to Rouge's design has no effect on the wider game.

Sonic x Shadow Generations releases this week and if you bought the Digital Deluxe Edition, early access has begun so you might be playing it already. Whether you are or not, images and details about the remaster/new game hybrid are out there, and since this is a Sonic game, of course everyone is being completely normal about the subtle changes you probably wouldn't have even noticed had someone not thrown them under a magnifying glass and started yelling about them.

The most pressing of these changes, at least according to some who have seen and compared them to the original concepts in Sonic Generations, is the one made to Rouge's appearance. The heart on the front of Rouge's outfit in the remake is higher than it is in the original version of Sonic Generations which means it covers more of her chest. A seemingly innocuous detail to most, but reactions to it from some Sonic fans online would make you think it's a change worthy of boycotting the game, and maybe to some it is.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a good remaster of a fan-favourite game, but it's Shadow's story that steals the show, acting as more of a remake.

Rouge tends to represent something that other Sonic characters don't to some fans and clearly the move away from that in the Generations remaster has touched a nerve with those who have viewed her a certain way in the past. It's not the only change that has got those same people riled up either. A scene in which Sonic holds Amy back by her face has been removed from the remaster. That people have a problem with that change is even more worrying than taking issue with the Rouge one if you think about it.

Sega Has Made Some Changes To The Sonic Generations Remaster

Happy With Them, Wildly Upset, Or Couldn't Care Less?

Not everybody has a problem or even cares about the Rouge censorship and the Sonic-Amy interaction detailed above, of course. In fact, the resounding reaction to those who have complained that Rouge is a little more covered up in 2024 than she was in 2011 is to highlight something so insignificant is ridiculous, and let's be honest, they're right. Had the internet not pointed out to me that Rouge's outfit had changed, I wouldn't have noticed. Instead, here I am writing about it. Thanks for that.

Despite some taking issue with the minor changes to Sonic x Shadow Generations, the reviews for it have been resoundingly positive, particularly when you compare it to most other 3D Sonic games. It's currently sitting on a 79 on OpenCritic which brings the curtain down on what has been one of the most successful years for Sega in recent history. From Infinite Wealth to Metaphor: ReFantazio and everything in between, Sega hasn't had a single miss in 2024.
