Sonic's latest adventure, Sonic Frontiers, released in November 2022. In the year prior, Sega released Sonic Colors Ultimate, which was a remaster of the beloved Wii title. Sonic Frontiers vastly changed the formula the series is known for; however, Colors has unique elements as well.

If you are a Sonic fan, you probably know that both these games are extremely different from one another. We will dive into stories, combat, levels, and more to decide whether Sonic Frontiers or Sonic Colors is better. The Sonic series is home to some fantastic games, and between Frontiers and Colors, one game is better than the other.

8 Story - Sonic Colors

Sonic Colors offered a fun story that did not take itself too seriously. It is not hard to follow this story at all, and that is important when playing a game like Sonic. If you have played Sonic Colors before, you know of all the shenanigans that Eggman pulls at Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park.

With Sonic Frontiers, it almost felt that some of the narrative choices were puzzling. Some moments in the game are head-scratching, with no real substance besides a few real narrative plot lines.

7 Enemy Design - Sonic Frontiers

Sonic Frontiers offered some of the best enemy designs found in the entirety of the Sonic series so far. They are extremely menacing, and offer a noteworthy threat that Sonic must face. You find all sorts of configurations of these enemies across the world, which allows for the game to stay fresh.

The smaller enemies are found commonly throughout the islands, and in addition, there are dozens of unique enemies you will have to face on each island. The giant machines that roam the Starfall Islands are all incredibly intricate and unique, which leads to all sorts of battles where you will find yourself learning the enemy's attack patterns.

6 Open World - Sonic Frontiers

The open world found in Sonic Frontiers easily clears the linear, level-based gameplay found in Sonic Colors. Frontiers offers five different islands that you can explore. To traverse them, you have to complete certain objectives to progress to the next.

Colors does not offer an open world of any sort, and coming off of Sonic Frontiers, this is a formula that has to be in all Sonic games going forward. It allows for the scale of everything to be drastically bigger, leading to huge battles and a wider range of gameplay tools and mechanics.

5 World Design - Sonic Colors

Sonic Colors offers an extremely vibrant world that you traverse through. This is played through linear levels, and although these might seem old school compared to Sonic Frontiers, they are a blast to play through.

Sonic Frontiers' open world was a great step forward; however, in some instances, the world felt somewhat empty in sections. By taking the vibrant and packed levels from Colors, the Sonic Team could improve the overall world design in the next game.

4 Soundtrack - Tie

Sonic music is always so good, we cannot pick either Sonic Frontiers or Sonic Colors over one another. Sonic Colors offers the forever classic Reach for the Stars, which is arguably one of the greatest songs to ever be in a Sonic game.

Frontiers, on the other hand, offers a great soundtrack in addition to a theme song sung by One OK Rock. Some of the Frontiers' soundtrack is a bit more atmospheric than previous games, but this is simply due to the game being open world. Overall, both of these games offer phenomenal soundtracks.

3 Combat - Sonic Frontiers

Combat in Sonic Frontiers is great, with all sorts of new skills available to unlock as you progress throughout the game. Since Frontiers offers an open world, you probably can guess that the combat is much different from anything seen in prior games. It takes inspiration from the past, and it clearly has references to its roots; however, it innovates and brings the series forward in a new and exciting way.

Colors offers combat that was directly tuned to address complaints from the prior games in the series. While this is still a good system, you just cannot replicate the number of abilities and combos that can be found in Sonic Frontiers.

2 Movement - Sonic Frontiers

Sonic feels wild in Sonic Frontiers. The movement across the Starfall islands is magical almost, with the sense of scale coming into the picture as you dash across fields. Sonic has never felt better movement-wise. Although there are certainly camera issues in Frontiers, it does not take away from the movement system that is in place.

Sonic Colors had great movement as well and improved upon its predecessors, however, it just cannot compare to the systems we have got from Sonic Frontiers.

1 Verdict - Sonic Frontiers

While both Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Colors are great games, Sonic Frontiers has made revolutionary changes to the Sonic formula that just cannot be looked over. From the enemy design to the combat, Sonic Frontiers elevates everything loved about previous titles. You can't go wrong with either game, but overall, we believe Sonic Frontiers offers a longer and more fun experience.
