Sonic X Shadow Generations and Sonic Frontiers are both big steps for the series, but which is the better game?
Posts 2 By PJ MolloyAs a celebration of the series' history, Sonic X Shadow Generations is filled with clever references and hidden details for long-time fans to discover. That said, some of these secrets are pretty tricky to spot, given the high-speed gameplay. In case you missed any, the following Easter Eggs are the very best in Sonic X Shadow Generations.
8 Speed Highway's Street Signs
References To Sonic Riders, The Chao Garden, And More
Both acts of Speed Highway are brimming with Easter Eggs. Scattered throughout the levels are street signs, billboards, and storefronts that reference Sonic characters or locations. These include a neon sign advertising Club Vector and a road map with directions to Jet Drive (a reference to Jet the Hawk from Sonic Riders).
If you're a Chao fan, you're in for a real treat. Depending on the route you take, you can find billboards for a movie called Chao in Space: The Search for Tikal, with the tagline, "A Film by Sonic the Hedgehog." There's even a highway sign for the Chao Garden. If only Sega would let you go there.
We've made a list of all the Easter Eggs in Speed Highway. And these are just the ones we were able to find!

A Homage To Sonic Adventure 2 And Sonic Heroes
If you've been following Sonic and Shadow's rivalry throughout the years, you may recognize the conversation they have before the Mephiles boss fight.
The Blue Blur says, "I've found you, Shadow!" To which Shadow replies, "The blue hedgehog...of all places." Both the dialogue and the actors' delivery are taken directly from a cutscene in Sonic Adventure 2, where the hedgehogs meet while escaping Prison Island.
Sonic later says, "That Chaos Emerald and I have a date with a monster," to which Shadow responds, "Well then, it'll be a date to die for." This is a variation of a cutscene from Sonic Heroes, in which the hedgehogs fight each other in a jungle.
6 The Sonic Adventure Pose
A Clever Nod To The Dreamcast
Long-time fans will undoubtedly remember Sonic's iconic pose from Sonic Adventure's Dreamcast cover art. You can get him to do the exact same pose in Sonic X Shadow Generations by performing a series of midair tricks.

Posts By PJ MolloyThankfully, it's pretty easy to do. First, find a yellow Trick Jump Panel or a Rainbow Ring in any Modern Sonic stage. Once you're in the air, repeatedly tilt the joystick in any direction to perform air tricks. Once you've started a combo, press both shoulder buttons at the same time to make Sonic strike the legendary pose.
5 Shadow's Love For Coffee
A Joke From Sonic's Twitter Page
Did you know that Shadow has an affinity for coffee? If you talk to Maria enough times, she'll ask Shadow what kind of food he likes besides coffee. This is a nod to a running gag from the Sonic Twitter Takeover series, in which Sonic and his pals tease Shadow for eating raw coffee beans with a spoon.
This could also be a reference to a scene from The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, where Shadow orders nothing but coffee beans and a spoon for lunch. Talk about a picky eater.
4 City Escape's Stores And Billboards
Who Knew Tails Owns A Restaurant?
City Escape is one of the best Sonic levels ever made, so it's no surprise that it has the most Easter Eggs out of any stage in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Like Speed Highway, you can find many references in the storefronts and billboards.
Some of them are pretty tough to spot, but if you take your time, you can find a restaurant called Tails' Pizza, a billboard for Charmy Bee's Sweet Honey Butter, and many others. There's even a billboard for Chao in Space 2 featuring a close-up of Perfect Chaos' eye, which is a reference to the opening cutscene from Sonic Adventure.

Great Music And Even Better Secrets
The song from City Escape Act One is not just a banger. It's also hiding an unused piece of music from Sonic Adventure 2. The melody that plays right before the track loops is from the demo version of the original City Escape song.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a few different versions of the years. Which is the most powerful?
Posts 1 By PJ MolloyCity Escape Act Two also has a musical Easter Egg. Right before the new section of the song, you can hear the guitar riff from the tune It Doesn't Matter from Sonic Adventure 2.
2 Missing And Wanted Posters
Cameos From Mighty, Fang, And More
The last Easter Eggs in City Escape are cameos from fan-favorite Sonic characters. Throughout the level, you can find wanted posters for Fang the Sniper (originally from Sonic Triple Trouble), Bean the Dynamite (originally from Sonic the Fighters), and Bark the Polar Bear (also from Sonic the Fighters)
You can also find missing posters for Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, which say, "Missing since 1993." This is a nod to the 1993 Japanese arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, which was the last appearance of either character at the time of Sonic Generations' initial launch.
Since then, Mighty and Ray have returned as playable characters in Sonic Mania Plus. Sadly, the Easter Egg wasn't updated with this in mind.
1 Terios The Hedgehog
Play As Shadow's Original Design
Here's a deep cut for you. There's a DLC skin for the game that turns Shadow into Terios the Hedgehog. This character was an early concept design for Shadow during the development of Sonic Adventure 2.
The name "Terios" roughly translates to "A reflection of," which is likely a reference to Shadow being a darker counterpart to Sonic. While the design was scrapped from Sonic Adventure 2, it's cool to see such an obscure piece of the series' history represented in Shadow Generations.
